Full Time
The Opportunity The opportunity requires good systems engineers and technologists who are interested in a new and exciting challenge working for a major defence supplier with an established and growing order book who are rated as a Sunday Times Top 30 company. The roles will work on the research and development of technologies, concept exploration, and the design and development of sub-systems/equipment for Surface Attack Weapon Systems. We have a need for engineers with a range of backgrounds and experience, from system engineers with multi-disciplinary experience of enterprise and sub-system design, to engineers with a focus on functional design, integration/verification engineers with functional and physical test experience and technologists with communications or mission systems experience. However, previous knowledge of weapons or weapon systems is not a pre-requisite. A series of in-house training courses provides an excellent technical background to enable talented engineers to adapt. We develop the ‘off-weapon’ components of the Weapon System that are required to prepare, plan and conduct a mission. These systems may be highly integrated into land, sea or air platforms, or they may be interconnected IT workstations and equipment adapted to specific purposes and environments. For Surface Attack weapons, the types of technologies and system under development include pilot decision aids, mission management, mission planning, mission rehearsal, launchers, mission execution (weapon control) systems and communications and datalinks. The Role You will be working with a group that works with projects developing cutting edge weapon systems from the early concept and assessment phases, through to the design, development and delivery of a working system. The nature of the work ranges from concept studies and assessment through to the design and development of equipment. Our systems are a combination of software, electrical and electronic architectures, with a bias towards functional design. We also enhance our capabilities through applied research and technology exploitation, and contribute towards a number of wider industry research and engineering technology programmes. The role requires systemic, flexible and agile thinkers who can work across the breadth of the system lifecycle. Depending upon the nature of the assignment and your experience, you may be developing future concepts, working with projects to develop the weapon system requirements, designing a sub-system with support from specialist domains, developing and implementing integration and test strategies or developing new technologies for adoption in future systems. The length of any assignment varies from a few months to years, and you may be required to support several projects in parallel. In order to ensure that our Products are designed and delivered in an efficient and cost-effective manner, the group adopts a Product Line approach to develop generic, re-usable components that are then exploited on Projects. In order to facilitate this we make comprehensive use of model-based engineering and generic architectures. What’s great about joining this team? Your role will be varied across the systems lifecycle phases, from the establishment of new concepts, the definition and management of system and sub-system requirements, through the architectural (model-based) system design and the final integration, verification and validation of the delivered equipment. You will work at different levels of abstraction, from the high-level enterprise architecture for a concept through the design of a sub-system to the detailed system or algorithm design of the generic product components that satisfies it. You will form relationships across the specialised MBDA technical departments to ensure that all design aspects are considered, such as software, electrical, electronic, safety and security. You will have the opportunity to work on product research and technology development, as well as the development of generic architectures for our Product Lines. You will be part of a team solving a very unique problem – how to establish and adopt generic military products in environments that, by their nature, have very differing constraints, whilst minimising time-to-market and costs, but maintaining the high standards demanded. You will be working within a multi-national organisation, which may involve joint working with different national companies, including limited travel both within the UK and Europe. What are we looking for? Essential: Sound understanding of systems engineering process and use of systems methods and tools, including requirements management, system architecture development, system proving, technical studies, etc. Experience in undertaking Studies to understand operational concepts, analyse system integration issues, develop system algorithms, analyse system performance, identify design options, consider design solutions, etc. Experience in system or sub-system design, with particular emphasis on functional architectures. A systemic thinker with the ability to solve problems in a structured manner, identifying key abstractions in their solution. Excellent reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills. An ability to adapt to changing priorities, programme needs and tasks. Openness to an understanding and use of industry best practice in the establishment of Product Lines. Relevant Engineering or Science based Degree (or equivalent). Desirable Experience in requirements definition, preferably using Rhapsody or DOORS, at both system and sub-system level. Experience in the use of structured systems analysis and design (preferably using Rhapsody with SysML or UML). Knowledge of configuration management principles and tools (preferably RTC). Knowledge of applicable system design domains such as electrical, electronics and software. Exposure to software architectures, technologies and methods. Experience in algorithm specification, development and validation (preferably using Matlab). Experience in establishing design assurance strategies and plans for the integration, verification and validation of the system. Experience in working in either a Product Line team or in a project team adopting a Product Line. Experience in working on defence or aerospace systems or similar complex engineering projects (for instance, in telecoms, rail, automotive sectors). Knowledge of Enterprise Architectures (preferably MODAF) and its application. Why should you come and work at MBDA?
