Maintenance Manager/Lead Engineer

Job Overview

The Maintenance Manager is part of the Management Team of the company. The main responsibilities of the role are to effectively manage a team of 4 Skilled engineers and 1 apprentice. To maintain the production lines running with minimum downtime and to ensure that all planned maintenance tasks are carried out promptly and correctly. Reporting directly to the Operations manager.

Overview of Responsibilities

·Effectively manage & motivate the multidiscipline maintenance team to ensure that the focus on production efficiency is maintained. To become familiar with the Shires “Pirana” planned maintenance system. Continue the initiative to work to high safety standards.

·Provide hands on management requiring significant time to be spent out on the lines with production colleagues and with the engineering team. The ability to communicate effectively is essential.

·Hold regular daily briefing meetings with the maintenance team, communicate regularly with the Operations Manager and attend key control meetings. Prepare and present Key Performance information weekly. Control and manage department costs including budgets, ordering services and spares, approving invoices and providing monthly cost v budgets reports. Assist in the management of projects.

·Actively support and endorse the Cultural Vision initiative – described later in this document

Main Duties

·Manage directly the Maintenance team

·Be a “ Power User” of the Pirana PPM system

·Ensure proactive out on line production support between 06.00 and 08.00

·Give priority to safety related tasks

·Ensure that safety standards are met

·Hold daily engineering meetings to cover morning and afternoon shifts

·Hold regular toolbox talks for the maintenance department

·Assist production colleagues to improve their line skills

·Ensure that all PPM tasks are attended to on time

·Ensure that there are no overdue PPM tasks

·Manage and supervise the Maintenance Stores and Critical spares

·Give hands on assistance to the maintenance team should it be necessary

·Plan and prepare for Maintenance tasks requiring plant or line shut downs

·Plan and approve Saturday Maintenance working

·Approve any Overtime working – in conjunction with the Operations Manager

·Manage & Deliver training and improvement programs for all engineers

·Provide the necessary maintenance input to improve line efficiencies

·Attend daily (or delegate) the 12.00 Production meeting and the 14.00 Production Shift hand over meeting

·Prepare the necessary information and update the summary sheet for the weekly Monday KPI meeting

·Attend the 09.00 weekly KPI meeting on Monday

·Prepare the necessary information and attend the Friday MEP meeting at 11.00

·Update the Operations Manager on key events and issues regularly and no longer than weekly

·Carry out annual performance reviews for the maintenance team

·Manage external service contracts, renewing as needed

·Organise weekly fire alarm tests and be familiar with the fire alarm procedures.

·Manage capital projects as and when needed

·Assist in producing annual maintenance budgets

·Control department spending on spares etc.

·Issue and record orders for spares and outside services

·Log and approve invoices

·Manage H&S policies for the Maintenance dept.

·Carry out any other duties which may reasonably be requested by the Company.

Essential personal qualities (Evidence of all qualifications and training will be required)

·Must believe in high levels of safety and safe working

·Strong experience in Food/Process/Chemical/Packaging industries

·Experience of Packaging in a FMCG environment with hands on experience

·Strong experience directly managing maintenance engineers.

·Apprentice trained with experience of Electrical, Mechanical and Control disciplines

·To hold a suitable technical/academic qualification and appropriate specialist training

·To cope well with pressure and able to deal well with difficult situations involving people and equipment

·Experience of a computerised Planned Preventative Maintenance system

·Firm and assertive but not aggressive

·Able to organise other trades and disciplines as needed – e.g. contractors

·Good Communicator – Verbal and Written

·Good plant trouble-shooter

·Able to communicate amicably with company staff at all levels

·Computer literate in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, E mails and PPM Maintenance system

·The ability to quickly learn company systems and Procedures

·50/50 electrical/mechanical split, or electrical bias

·Safety Qualification

·The Maintenance Manager will report to and work closely with the Operations Manager.

·They will also have close contact with Production Management colleagues, Accounting Department and Contractors as and when they are needed.

Maintenance Manager/Lead Engineer

Hours of Work

·Typically, 37.5 hours a week, 08.00 to 16.00 with ½ hour lunch break Monday to Friday

·Occasional Saturdays and Sundays – by agreement in advance

·Some longer days will be necessary – when meeting deadlines or dealing with a plant emergency

·During the induction period, it will be necessary to attend some early morning start-ups and end of day shut downs.

·All personnel are responsible for ensuring that all health & safety rules and procedures, as set out in the Company Handbook, are followed and adhered to at all time.

·It is everyone’s responsibility to report any near misses and unsafe working practices and to also report accidents and incidents to their direct manager.

Associated Duties

·Periodical internal auditing on PPM completion and quality.

·To support the team and assist in the attainment of the Engineering Objectives.

·To support the Factory Director, Technical manager and Operations Manager with the improvement (Capex) projects.

·To assist with factory and technical H&S improvement projects.

·Complete benchmarking activities.
