Your new company
The role of this department is to ensure that the organisation has the modern, robust, reliable, high-performing and leading-edge IT facilities it requires to support the distinctive needs of those engaged in teaching, learning, research, administration and strategic planning. The department is divided into groups covering infrastructure services, projects and programmes, software development, customer services, and academic IT services (specifically focussed on supporting teaching, learning, and research). The organisation has around 400 staff across 4 buildings, an annual revenue budget of c. £30m and an IT capital plan of approximately £60M across three years.

Your new role
The department has a Finance team which is split into three main areas: Purchasing, Projects and General Ledger with a manager heading up each section, the department's finance team is headed up by the Head of Finance. This role sits within the Projects team. Over the last few years, expenditure on IT projects has increased significantly. The capital envelope has stabilised around £60m over a 3 year funding window, currently covering 80 live projects, and the recurrent IT spend is approx. £30m pa. The Projects team monitor and report on the three year capital envelope. Reporting is required both internally (e.g. Project managers, Director of Projects, Deputy CIO and SMT) and externally (e.g. IT Committee, various IT Boards). This post will support the capital projects programme and be responsible for project recharges via journals among other duties. The Projects Team is led by the Senior Project Accountant and consists of two Project Accountants

What you'll need to succeed

  • Several years' experience of working in a large accounting department, part qualified accountant or qualified by experience.
  • Good Excel skills e.g. ability to create and manipulate pivot tables and manage large volumes of data.
  • Experience in preparation of management accounts and the analysis of variances. Review and challenge of financials with line managers.
  • Evidence of attention to detail (e.g. experience of distributing complex or confidential information without requiring review).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability and willingness to work and co-operate effectively with people from different organisational levels, both internally and externally as may be required.
  • A flexible and resilient approach to work, able to use initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Highly organised, with excellent attention to detail, high level of accuracy and effective in prioritising work.


  • Previous experience and understanding of the University financial procedures, or experience in a similar role and working environment
  • Experience of the Oracle Financials system
