Sphere Medical is a dynamic company based in Cambridge UK, specialising in the development of innovative medical monitoring and diagnostic equipment. The Company’s strategy is focused on developing its flagship product, the Proxima platform for on-patient, near real-time measurement of key blood analytes (gases, electrolytes, metabolites…). Proxima is designed to benefit a wide spectrum of patients, enabling faster decision making and improved clinical outcomes, whilst reducing cost.

Contributing to Sphere Medical represents a valued opportunity to be exposed to the full cycle of medical device development, from initial concept generation through to regulatory approval and commercialisation. The Company seeks to provide an environment enabling its employees to grow, expanding their skillsets through training and first-hand experience.

The Company has established partnerships with renowned research hospitals enabling the on-patient use of the current generation of Proxima (CE-marked device) in the OR and the ICU, and is as a result generating a wealth of real-world data. In-house testing under controlled conditions adds to this volume of data, including that from the next generation Proxima (currently under development) providing a clear path towards automated operation and a greatly expanded analyte test panel.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Data Analysis and Algorithms Scientist or Engineer, to join the Sensor and Algorithm Development Group. The role encompass two core areas. The development and maintenance of data infrastructure, processing tools and databases to further R&D, whilst also contributing to the design of novel algorithms to enhance the performance and capabilities of Proxima. The role requires a solid grounding in the physical sciences including a relevant undergraduate degree, and confidence when it comes to processing and using large datasets. Experience of using or programming in VBA and MATLAB or similar computing languages is considered favourable, though their absence need not put off a strong applicant.

Primary Roles:

·To contribute to Sphere Medical’s research and development activities, focussed towards the development of novel and innovative medical devices

·To maintain and develop the data analysis infrastructure; data collection, storage, networking and processing

·To contribute to/champion analytics projects within R&D, encompassing data analysis, algorithm development and mathematical/computational modelling

·To contribute to the wider planning, design, development and review of the Proxima platform and, where necessary, to liaise with external consultants and contractors

The following experience/skills are deemed highly advantageous:

·Use, and more preferably development, of data analysis and statistical processing tools (MATLAB, VBA, R, SAS, SPSS, Minitab…) and database integration packages (SQL, MS Access)

·Strong mathematical/physical science mind-set

·Experience of algorithm development, ideally in the fields of analytics or diagnostics

·Industrial experience, especially with exposure to medical device development (i.e. ISO 13485)

Personal Attributes:

·Self-motivated and enthusiastic with the ability to work independently and deliver to a schedule

·Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to work within a multi-disciplinary team

·Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics
