Our Hampshire based client is a leading designer and manufacturer of fiber lasers for use in cutting, welding and marking applications in a wide range of industries. They are seeking a new Senior Optical Design Engineer to expand their development team.
Job Purpose:This role will significantly influence the optical component development of next generation fibre laser products through the full product development lifecycle, ensuring the requirements of all stakeholders are met, including other product development functions, product marketing and introduction into manufacturing. This is a key role in the Components Development team with interaction across many functions within the company, and with significant influence on the successful launch of new products to market.
Key Areas of Responsibility:•Design and specification of high power optical components including all-fibre integrated and discrete optic systems•Generation of design and procurement specifications for high power optical components and coatings•Design and implementation of optical test equipment and procedures for manufacturing high power optical systems•High power laser characterization and integration including optical characterisation in high power optical systems•Liaison with customer and suppliers for product design, specification and compliance•Documentation for transferring new products/processes from Development to Manufacturing•Work closely with Mechanical Engineering team to design opto-mechanical systems•Work within multidisciplinary NPI teams and Production to deliver new products as defined by the strategic plans
Required Experience:The role requires a strongly practical, hands-on approach to product development, notwithstanding the need to understand and apply the principles of physics related to optical component design, development and application.
Ideally the successful candidate will have up to 5 years experience in a product development environment in either the high-power laser field or in an optics area within a related industry, for example aerospace, industrial laser systems or analytical instrumentation, and will possess some knowledge and understanding of competitive technologies, performance-critical requirements and reliability.
Candidates should also be able to demonstrate:•Hands-on experience of optical design at component or system level •Experience with Zemax optical design software•Optical design, prototyping and validation •Hands-on experience of component or system development and characterization •Experience of high power lasers and/or optical fibres/ components •May have some experience of small scale project management
Qualifications:•BSc degree minimum or higher qualified in applied optics, physics, materials science, or engineering preferably with at least two years hands-on experience of working with high power optical systems or•Equivalent capability through experience in working in the high power laser / optics industry (>5 years) ideally in manufacturing, high power optical design or optical component manufacture/testing
