This senior-level BD Manager role encompasses all aspects of business development and marketing, involves a high degree of people management and assumes significant involvement and influence with partners and associates both in the UK and internationally.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Driving and ensuring implementation of the firm's business development strategy for the relevant practice areas/sectors – thus enabling revenue growth
  • Developing strong and influential relationships with lawyers and staff to cause their active engagement with, and support for, the sector's business development programmes
  • Developing clear strategies and BD plans, formulating aligned marketing campaigns and maintaining a strong focus on growing key client relationships
  • Directly managing a service orientated, high-performing business development team, and supporting each team members' development
  • Engaging productively with the BD team internationally, ensuring strategies and campaigns maximise opportunities around the firm, and opportunities are pursued in a coordinated and efficient fashion
  • Effectively supporting the Senior Business Development Managers and Heads of Department as appropriate to deliver broader firm projects and focus on larger picture strategy
  • Develop and agree BD objectives and strategies for your sectors in consultation with key partners and Business Development teams, ensuring appropriate alignment across the firm's network
  • Lead the business development agenda for your sectors, driving partner BD meetings and activities
  • Maintain and monitor relevant business development budgets to ensure appropriate expenditure and that the firm receives suitable return on investment
  • Effectively manage the communication, marketing and client development programs of your sectors, in coordination with Communications and Marketing teams
  • Manage, and where necessary create, all marketing materials and activities in support of the business development agendas – e.g. brochures, directories, web pages, publications, events, sponsorships
  • Work with the Communications and Marketing teams to ensure PR strategies support business development plans and enhance campaigns
  • Create and maintain differentiating proposal materials and effectively manage pitches and RFPs
  • Ensure our approach to pitches is informed by sector knowledge and productive relationships with PSLs and other specialist resources
  • Manage a mixed ability team, overseeing their contribution, their management of other team members and their achievement of a high level of service and performance, while encouraging their own development and growth

Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level (2:1 or above) or possesses equivalent experience
  • Holds a professional marketing qualification, e.g. CIM/CAM (desirable)
  • Considerable experience of working as a Business Development practitioner at management level within a fast-paced professional services environment, preferably within the legal industry, including:
    • Leading sector-focused business development and marketing activities
    • Developing and implementing business plans
    • Managing integrated and sector-focused marketing and client development plans
    • Management of marketing materials and activities to support the sector's agenda
    • Managing pitch efforts and proposal materials
    • Preferably some knowledge of the relevant sector
  • Experience of managing and coaching the development of junior team members
  • Experience of formulating and managing budgets and overseeing the monitoring of spend and any associated reports
  • Able to work closely with partners and associates and possesses the ability to influence key partners and decision making groups and manage the implementation of outcomes from these groups
  • Strong IT skills with experience of CRM systems (preferably InterAction), Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities within tight timescales
  • Able to work to very tight deadlines under pressure and to assimilate information quickly
  • Strong interpersonal skills including confidence, positivity, diplomacy and the ability to gain credibility quickly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
