Head of Digital Services

£57,855 - £66,533 + allowance + civil service pension arrangements (up to 22% employer contribution) + generous annual leave

Bristol or Nottingham

I am seeking an advocate for digital solutions become the Head of Digital Services within in a large government department that is currently undergoing a huge digital transformation. You will be heading up an award-winning digital team with an ambitious digital service portfolio, whose services are high profile and relatable to everyone. You will play an integral part in developing and maintaining digital services within a mature agile environment where their release cycle works comfortably on a 10 day cycle. The department is a strong advocate of using open source technologies and designs and delivers its digital services in accordance with the Government Digital Service Design Standard. The Digital Service Standard is a set of 18 criteria that will ultimately allow you to create and run excellent digital services that meet the needs of users and government.

You will be responsible for defining and delivering the strategic goals of the digital department ensuring that digital services are designed to meet user needs and are iteratively improved over time, along with ensuring that digital services meet the Digital by Default Service Standard and strategic goals before they are launched on GOV.UK. You will drive the successful delivery of a portfolio of large scale (30m transactions p/a+, £50m+ budget, £1bn+ economic value) digital projects within time and cost constraints.

Additionally you will work with technical teams at all levels, from design through to development, implementation, operation, support and continuous improvement and provide leadership to the digital team, and high-level contract management support with suppliers, supported by procurement and vendor management.

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable and practical experience at a senior level of delivering transformational change to business technologies and processes, using Agile methodologies to deliver benefits, cost savings and service improvements for users and stakeholders
  • Strong technical background including recent experience of delivering large scale cloud based digital services through all agile stages (Alpha, Beta and Live; or equivalents)
  • Demonstrable experience of the management of a digital service.
  • Experience of working in multi supplier environments, procuring and managing services, vendor relationships and deliverables. Including managing multi vendor teams working alongside internal resources
  • Strong leaderships skills, the ability to engage and influence at all levels, including playing a key role in setting and communicating organisational objectives, influencing policy and driving a collaborative approach both within the department and across government and external agencies
  • Able to demonstrate an innovative approach to developing digital services and continuous improvement.
