Post: Mobility and Habilitation Specialist
Reports to: College Manager
Salary: £26,082 per Annum, Full-Time

Closing Date: 1st March 2017

Primary Objectives:

To provide mobility training to the students in Dorton College and young people who are part of RSBC programmes and activities.

Key Tasks and Main Duties:

Dorton College:

• To deliver mobility training to the students including at our partnership providers and in the community
• To undertakes assessments of prospective students and provide reports detailing their mobility needs
• To work with other staff teams to ensure that the students ability to be independent is continually extended and improved
• To provide update and reports on the students as requires
• When required provide information regarding student’s progress towards meeting their targets and objectives. This will involve being aware of and acting in support of each students educational and leisure programmes and activities

Community Services:

• To provide mobility training for the young people taking part in the programmes with the aim of them being able to travel independently, particularly in London
• To support young people in finding the safest and best routes to enable them to attend sessions, work placements and other destinations safely and independently
• To provide the mobility aspects of individual young people’s individual action plans and to support them in achieving their objectives
• To provide advice and support for the delivery of life skills and other associated aspects of developing independence

Other Overarching Tasks:

• To provide risk assessments of routes, environments and activities as required
• To provide sighted guide training to staff and volunteers, including regular updates and observation of skills
• Keep abreast of developments in the field of Habilitation and Mobility
• Ensure that equality and diversity is embedded in all activities
• To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the Society’s learners/clients and all other children and young people/vulnerable adults that have contact with the organisation

Person Specification:

Professional Qualifications:

• Nationally recognised qualification in Mobility/Habilitation
• Minimum of L2 literacy and numeracy qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

• Significant experience of working with children and young people with vision impairment, including those with additional needs
• Ability to communicate instruction and teaching clearly to children, young people and staff
• Experience of working with a range of professionals
• Ability to write clear reports assessing need and progress
• Good IT skills
• Ability to work as part of a multi-professional team
• The ability to motivate young people who for a variety of reasons display ambivalence
• Sound knowledge of and experienced in using London transport and the acility to teach young people to do so

Desirable:

• Mobility/Habilitation qualification to work with children or the entry requirements to undergo any top up modules.
