Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Clean Energy

Location: This position will be based near Guildford, Surrey, UK. Willingness to travel to other UK sites and suppliers is essential.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of a company that is at the forefront of fuel cell stack technology. This leading UK fuel cell technology developer is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its expanding team.

The role will be responsible for providing engineering services which will develop existing products predominantly with Fuel Cell Stack design, increasing reliability and performance of the stack and balance of plant and focusing on cost reduction strategies at component, and stack balance of plant level.

An understanding of complex system interactions and possible trade-offs for the fuel cell stack design would be beneficial. Equally the ability to troubleshoot and articulate clear concise feedback on findings associated with assembling stack components are also essential.

Role and Responsibilities:

• Provide well thought out practical engineering solutions to next generation stack designs, troubleshooting and learning from incumbent design and

to identify issues affecting cost and reliability before and after installation.
• Assist in developing procedures within the Engineering department.
• Support Field Service personnel as technical liaison should new issues arise.
• Produce calculations to back up concepts and final designs.
• Support Commercial / Business Development Group on key technical / operational issues that support acquisition of new projects.

Skills and Experience:

• A minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience in fuel cell and associated balance of plant design or similar industries.

• Minimum HND Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Good working knowledge of CAD software (primarily SolidWorks), including applicable drafting standard BS8888 or equivalent.
• Knowledge of ANSYS Simulation software (or similar)
• Familiarity with Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's), Process and Flow Diagrams (PFD's), Hazard ad Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).

• Good understanding of electro-mechanical components (and sensors) including: fans, blowers, scrubber pumps, solenoid valves, pressure transducers and thermocouples.
• Professional and collaborative with the ability to work closely with customers
• Self-starter / proactive and persistent with well-developed analytical skills.
• Hands-on and willingness to support interaction with electrical / control aspects of the design
• Strong understanding of pressure, flow, expansion, compression, thermal effects on various systems and knowledge of materials with a bias towards plastics and production processes, sealing applications and different types of technology available.
• Ability to carry out root-cause analysis

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills that include:

o Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, concise manner for both technical and a non-technical audience.
o Ability to interact with all levels of an organization effectively, from facilities personnel to financial leadership.
o Ability to confidently and clearly defend technical recommendations utilising sound industry standards and referencing past performance.
o Proficient in MS Office
