Job Description

Our well-renowned, fully insured North Herts-based dog exercise business The Dog Pack is now expanding our team. We offer a flexible service to our client base and reflect this with our team as well. Many of our current team have other jobs, undertake voluntary work and have other responsibilities and are encouraged to select shifts according to their availability so our positions of Dog Walkers (PackLeaders and PackAssistants) and Dog Boarders/Pet Sitters (PackBoarders) would suit similar people.

We serve Hitchin and all surrounding areas. We walk on weekdays and soon-to be at weekends.

We are looking for PackLeaders (around 4.5hrs per PackWalk including collecting and dropping off PackDogs), PackAssistants (meeting at the venue for the walk for 1 hr PackWalk with the possibility of walking on 2 or 3 walks during the day subject to your availability) and PackBoarders (people to board dogs in their own home overnight whilst owners are away on holiday, for example). All new team members will begin by assisting on walks before being given the appropriate training to confidently lead a PackWalk if suitable experience with dogs and a full, clean driving license are both held.

Candidates who also have the ability to board dogs for overnight periods in your own home (i.e. you own your own home or can obtain written permission from a landlord if renting) as well as having the ability to be a PackLeader or PackAssistant will be welcomed. All necessary licenses will need to be obtained before boarding commences but support will be provided by The Dog Pack to do so.

PackLeaders and PackAssistants

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • A confident driver who is comfortable driving a Transit or equivalent sized van;
  • A clean, full driving license held for at least 5 years;
  • Experience caring for and walking groups of dogs and confident handling all sizes and breeds of dog;
  • Trustworthy and responsible due to having access to client's homes and tasked with caring for their beloved pets;
  • High level of initiative;
  • Availability at weekends as well as or instead of some weekdays;
  • Good attention to detail to plan and schedule optimum routes to collect and drop-off dogs;
  • High level of concentration to care for our PackDogs on a PackWalk and anticipate potential dangers to minimise risk;
  • A current self-employed status or happy to be self-employed;
  • A current DBS certificate or willingness to immediately obtain one;
  • Two references that can be provided on request.

In return, for PackLeaders and PackAssistants we offer:

  • Flexible, regular working hours;
  • A fully paid Dog First Aid Training Course (PackLeaders);
  • Insurance on our vehicles;
  • Our current rate of pay is £8.25 per hour which is a significantly higher rate than both the National Minimum and National Living Wage;
  • Fresh air, exercise and canine companionship.

PackBoarders

We are looking for candidates with the following skills, experience and home living environment:

  • Ideally, ownership of your own home or the ability to obtain written permission from a landlord if renting to board dogs, or if not, the willingness to housesit dogs in their current home overnight.
  • Willingness to pay an annual licensing fee to the Council (currently around 129.00 for 2017/18) to obtain a Home Boarding For Dogs license;
  • Availability mainly during evenings, overnight and mornings with dogs out for usual PackWalks during the day;
  • Suitability of accommodation to keep around two PackDogs. This means individual attention will be able to be given to dogs when boarding and is a sensible number as a number of our PackParents have two-dog households.
  • Consideration of the number of current dogs you have in your home as well as children or vulnerable adults and the suitability of boarding dogs in your environment. The Council and/or The Dog Pack may impose restrictions based on such factors;
  • Ability to safeguard dogs in an emergency and the provision of isolation facilities to protect from infectious diseases;
  • Openness to the Council inspecting your premises before giving you a license, and at any time after your license is granted;
  • No previous ban from keeping a pet shop, or conviction of any other animal welfare offences;
  • A clean, full driving license held for at least 5 years;
  • Experience caring for and walking groups of dogs and confident handling all sizes and breeds of dog;
  • Trustworthy and responsible due to having access to client's homes (when collecting or dropping off dogs to or from boarding or looking after them in their own homes at times) and tasked with caring for their beloved pets;
  • High level of initiative;
  • Availability at weekends as well as or instead of some weekdays;
  • Good attention to detail to meet the required needs of dogs;
  • High level of concentration to care for dogs and anticipate potential dangers to minimise risk;
  • A current self-employed status or happy to be self-employed;
  • A current DBS certificate or willingness to immediately obtain one;
  • Two references that can be provided on request.

In return, for PackBoarders we offer:

  • Flexible, regular working hours;
  • A fully paid Dog First Aid Training Course;
  • Canine companionship in a comfortable environment for you both – earn money whilst being at home;
  • No need to take daytime hours off your current work due to dogs being with their current Pack on PackWalks;

There is no current official closing date for applications. We are taking on new staff on a rolling basis at present until we have a complete team to cover the needs of our PackDogs as we continue to expand.

Please submit both a cover letter detailing your suitability for this post and a CV

Stage 2: Two trial walks to see how a candidate gets on with our Pack (and/or a home visit for PackBoarders)
