Company Description Kite Power Systems Ltd (KPS) is a UK-based developer of disruptive, low-cost, wind energy technology whose main shareholders are E.ON, Schlumberger, Shell Technology Ventures and Scottish Enterprise. The KPS power system has two kites that are flown as high as 1,500 feet (450m); their tether is attached to a winch system that generates electricity as it spools out. By achieving flight speeds of up to 100mph (45m/s) in 20mph (9m/s) winds, the kite’s tether tension causes the line to rapidly spool out from a drum, which drives a generator producing electricity. The company is based in Glasgow with test facilities in the south-west of Scotland. Job Title Graduate Engineer (with experience) Location Based at Stranraer, but with regular travel to other KPS locations Salary A competitive basic salary will be offered, depending on experience. Start Date Immediately Job Description The Operations Team of KPS are looking for a graduate engineer, ideally with a few years of experience in industrial product development, maintenance or support. You should have a degree in a relevant field. Role and Responsibilities You will become a multi-skilled Operator of the kite systems You will be trained to our Operational flight standard which includes working at height, manual handling, fire awareness, first aid and radio procedures, as well as the flight roles. When not actively flying you will support the planning of flights, maintenance of flight procedures and records and maintenance and fault finding on the equipment You will work with the Engineering team, jointly developing and implementing change and improvements to deliver reliability and availability of the overall system You will develop the appropriate Safe Systems of Work, in conjunction with the Operations Team Required Skills You will be a graduate with a few years relevant experience in a related subject You will be practical and able to undertake basic assembly, testing, fault finding and maintenance aspects You will have experience of fabrication, assembly, testing, commissioning and fault finding on industrial equipment You will have a good understanding of industrial control systems You will be very familiar with circuit diagrams and will be able to update (paper and ideally CAD) diagrams appropriately You will enjoy working with ground breaking technology, using your experience to improve the systems You should have a working knowledge of high power DC systems, including motors and controllers You will have demonstrable experience of system testing including the development of, or input into the development of detailed test plans You will have knowledge of hydraulic accumulators, proportional valves and hydraulic motors, as these components are at the heart of our Product You will be an excellent communicator, both verbal and written and with a good attention to detail You will need to enjoy working outdoors, as the equipment will eventually be located in Scotland’s finest You will enjoy learning new skills and be keen to become a fully qualified kite flyer ! Lastly, you must be a team player, enjoy working in a small tight knit team and have a can-do positive attitude, wholly supporting the team in the overall objective of safe flight and safe power production Desired Skills You will be supported to develop your skills in areas such as Engineering, Project Management, CAD/CAM systems, as of interest to you and the Company Working experience of high power AC applications Working knowledge of radio communications systems Category C, C1, E, LGV driving licence (in addition to a full standard license) Current First Aid at Work Certificate Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance QHSE experience and training Benefits 25 days annual leave per year, plus bank holidays Pensions scheme with up to 10% personal contribution Share Option Scheme
