North Bristol NHS Trust
Substantive Consultant in Burns & Plastic Surgery

This is a full time substantive consultant post in the Burns and Plastic Surgery Department, with a major interest in Burn Surgery. The work of the Burns and Plastic Surgery department covers a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions including burns, skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma and laser therapy. Combined multidisciplinary clinics held in association with other allied health professions include burns, head and neck surgery, lower limb reconstruction, skin oncology, sarcoma and hand surgery.

The successful candidate will join the current team of 5 Consultant Burns Surgeons. This sixth appointment is in line with recommendations set out in the National Burn Care Standards (2013).

The Burns service is delivered across two sites in Bristol. The Burns Consultants work on a service week model. In hours, during a service week, once Consultant is based at Southmead Hospital covering the Adult Burns Unit and a second Consultant is based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children covering the Paediatric Burns Centre. These weeks form part of a six week rolling cycle.

The remaining four non-service weeks contain a combination of general and local anaesthetic operating lists, multidisciplinary meetings and outpatient clinics. The MDTs run on Mondays across both sites, as such, travel time is allocated for this within the job plan.

The Burns and Plastics Surgery department has one dedicated ward (33A). The Burns Unit is based on the ward consisting of seven side rooms. There is ring-fenced access to the ITU and HDU.

At Southmead Hospital (the Adult Service), a protected Burns emergency theatre runs three times per week, however, access to the burns theatre is available at all times.

At Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, there is 24 hour access to a designated Burns Theatre.

The successful candidate will participate in a 1:6 out of hours on-call rota with junior support in each hospital available at all times.

Closing Date - 03rd December 2017
Interview Date - 23rd January 2017
