Knowledge, Skills and Experience

You will have knowledge and experience of up-to-date front-end development techniques, including:

  • HTML5, CSS, LESS and responsive web design
  • JavaScript and jQuery
  • Some knowledge of JavaScript modules, design patterns and object-orientated programming
  • Ability to pick up new front-end frameworks and libraries when necessary
  • Familiarity with command line usage, build tools (e.g Grunt) and Git
  • Cross-browser and cross-device issues, including historical browsersJavaScript, jQuery & JSON
  • Object-oriented JavaScript
  • Some knowledge of JavaScript modules, package management and design patterns
  • Ability to pick up new front-end frameworks and libraries when necessary
  • Cross-browser and cross-device issues, including historical browsers
  • JavaScript task managers such as Grunt.js
  • JavaScript libraries such as Underscore.js
  • Command line usage
  • Sprint board systems such as Trello or Jira
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photos
  • Ability to deliver great work within agreed deadlines
  • Ability to cope with multiple stakeholders with differing priorities and opinions of design aspects, sometimes with passionate opinions and strong personalities
  • Ability to take a proactive and flexible approach to work and be comfortable with a dynamic environment with constantly changing priorities
  • A genuine passion for TV
  • Working as part of an agile team

Desirable but not essential:

  • Developing for Django-based websites
  • Appcelerator Titanium JS framework
  • The BBC TAL framework
  • Some basic understanding of Node JS
  • Some understanding of HTML5 video playback
  • Some knowledge of TV and VOD landscapes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop well-formed and logical code across a range of projects or platforms where necessary, including our websites, mobile apps and TV app.
  • Work from supplied designs with a strong sense of detail using your proven experience in responsive web development using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript
  • Implement new features, bug fixes and maintenance across our range of digital products, which includes websites, mobile apps and TV app.
  • Manage workload proactively alongside the project managers and other developers, creating time estimates where necessary with quickly changing priorities
  • Take part in research into new frameworks, tools or technologies when the time arises to assist in developing prototypes or new features
  • Be aware of ongoing strategic and consumer research and how it affects the evolution of the digital strategy and the broader digital landscape
  • Contribute to the sprint planning process to accurately size stories, establish team velocity and prioritise stories according to the wider priorities and strategy of stakeholders
  • Contribute to sprint showcases to inform the wider business of progress
  • Contribute to the sprint retrospectives to constantly strive to improve processes
  • Keep the Senior Front End Developer in regular touch with progress and issues
  • Follow UKTV’s financial procedures ensuring all supplier agreements and payments are processed within company guidelines
  • Live and embrace UKTV’s values

Complexity & Problem Solving:

  • Routinely deal with complex problems such as bugs, cross-browser and devices issues
  • Routinely research new and unknown coding challenges, for new products and unfamiliar platforms
  • Manage workload across multiple projects concurrently, requiring excellent organisation

  • Contribute to a strong sense of unity and harmony within the digital products team, proactively sorting out issues and being a key source of positivity and encouragement
  • Remain calm under pressure and to think clearly and collaboratively when required
  • Harness team spirit across UKTV and collaborate with colleagues across the business to deliver successful programmes
  • Promote and display trust to build successful business relationships and contacts

  • Have a direct impact on our audience through the quality of our range of digital products
  • Have an understanding of the wider strategy and company stakeholders, and how this role contributes to it, particularly around commercial potential of direct to consumer digital products
