We are Recruiting for a Software Development/Test Engineer for a Defence Client in Preston on an initial 12 month contract, paying £42.50 an hour LTD.

Job Description

The Simulation department is an operational area within Test & Evaluation Engineering based at Preston. The department is responsible for a range of highly capable facilities that are utilised in the support of Air Vehicle, Flight Systems and Mission Systems development. The primary activities performed within the department are Flight Control System development, operational effectiveness studies, rapid engineering of cockpit displays & systems, lighting assessments, development of Synthetic Environments, support to Sales & Marketing campaigns and the design, build and manufacture of cockpit demonstrators and training systems.

Simulation wish to recruit an experienced, flexible, highly motivated Software Development / Test Engineer to support the development of software applications for a ground-based training system. The nature of the work performed is likely to be extremely varied but daily activities will involve working closely with other members of the Simulation Rapid Application Development Team and various Customers to perform software development and integration testing tasks. This will frequently necessitate dealing with challenging timescales, evolving requirements and working with emerging technologies and novel concepts. Some limited off-site UK-based deployment for periods of up to one week may also be required to support integration testing and problem resolution activities, but this can be adapted to accommodate personal circumstances.

Excellent C++ programming abilities, a methodical approach to integration and testing, experience of technical report writing and a good working knowledge of modelling and simulation concepts are essential along with prior experience of tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Enterprise Architect, Premake, Mercurial, Doxygen and the Microsoft Office suite. These skills must be coupled with good team-working, problem solving, personal time management and general communication abilities. A background knowledge of Object Oriented Design techniques, Agile software development practices, automated software test tools, UML, hardware/software integration and the Windows operating system would also be beneficial.


Responsibilities

Provide Software Engineering expertise to generate well designed, supportable and maintainable software products that meet Customer requirements.
* Work with other developers in an organised and methodical manner to conduct System Integration activities.
* Support independent testing of software applications developed by other team members and provide written and verbal constructive feedback regarding the results.
* Provide low-level estimates for tasks to assist in the overall scheduling of activities within an Agile software development context.
* Create software documentation of an appropriate level to support the on-going development and maintenance of software products associated with the system.
* Work in close partnership with Customers, other Simulation teams and individual team members whenever and wherever required.
* Ensure that all personal engineering activities are conducted in accordance with the departmental Quality Management System (QMS).
* Participate in independent quality reviews of developed applications based upon local Quality Standards.
* Exhibit professional behaviours at all times.
* Support the timely provision of task status and performance reports to all key stakeholders as required.
* Ensure timely and accurate booking of hours on a weekly basis and monitor personal spend on all tasks being performed.
* Ensure that appropriate security procedures are followed at all times.
* Take personal responsibility to ensure that all reasonably practical measures are taken to reduce the risks and impacts associated with health, safety and the environment.

The Individual

The candidate must be prepared to travel to Customer sites within the UK if necessary to support integration testing and problem resolution activities.
The Candidate should be Excellent in Windows C++ Development, Microsoft Visual Studio, Automated Testing, Integration Testing, Written & verbal Skills, Team Working, Problem Solving. Good Software Configuration Management, Premake, Software Documentation & Microsoft Office
