We have recently launched one of the newest, largest networks in the UK, built using the latest SDN and MPLS technologies. Our new network is a carrier grade infrastructure present in more than 400 points of presence across the UK, and built from the ground up for “5 9s” availability. As one of the only truly multi-service networks, you will rise to the unique challenge of supporting the connectivity, voice, hosting and security needs of our residential, business, channel and wholesale customers

To maintain this network, we are now in the process of creating a new first class Network Operations Centre within Zen and as such, we're looking for a Senior Network Operations Engineer to join the business and help influence and shape its set up.

You will be a hands-on engineer with a background in the ISP or Telecoms industry. Working closely with your team colleagues, you will be a positive communicator and a proactive team member, able to demonstrate a great depth of knowledge in the management of our network. You will guide the development of the operations team and will lead the way in ensuring that our operational management processes are robust and effective. This includes tools optimization, proactive network health management and high levels of transparency for change planning and incident management.

You will ensure, at all times, that our network is operating as expected, that the team can plan for growth and change in a timely, controlled manner and that the team is able to deal with faults and incidents quickly and effectively. You will also take the lead in supporting the successful transition of network services from the Engineering team, ensuring that the operations teams can provide the proactive and routine management needed to achieve the desired levels of security, availability and performance.

You will also be a 2nd and 3rd line point of contact for service faults, demonstrating excellent problem solving skills and an ability to learn quickly and to adapt your existing skills and knowledge to support our network. Part of your responsibilities will be the participation in a 24x7 call-out rota. In carrying out these activities you will proactively contribute to and support the development of the Operations team to ensure we can continue to achieve our goals for the department and for Zen.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Operations in developing the skills and knowledge of our NOC and operations engineers.
  • Support the Head of Operations in managing day to day work allocations across the team and monitoring the performance of more junior members of the team.
  • Proactively monitor the status, utilisation, performance and availability of our network and network services.
  • Take the lead in supporting Engineering projects, working with colleagues to create test plans, transition plans, network documentation and operational maintenance plans.
  • Organise and lead pre-defined expansion plans to our network to ensure the continuing availability, performance and capacity of our network and network services.
  • Organise and lead pre-defined config changes to our network to support the continuing expansion of user growth and service changes to our network.
  • Organise and lead timely patching and upgrades according to the maintenance schedule or in response to incidents.
  • Organise and lead scheduled testing that verifies security and failover mechanisms on our services, ensuring that recovery procedures are kept up to date and understood by the team.
  • Organise and lead planned changes and improvements to our live environments in line with our change management process, ensuring they have gone through an effective peer review and testing process prior to implementation.
  • Respond (with a sense of urgency) to faults, alerts, escalations and change requests on our network.
  • Identify and escalate issues on problematic platforms or highlight recurring technical problems.
  • Contribute to regular reviews of our network services and ensure that our network is achieving, and will continue to achieve desired performance levels.
  • Protect the security of our services and data.
