Job Role: Class Underwriter, Medical Malpractice
Reports to: Head of Business Unit (Senior Underwriter, Medical Malpractice)
Salary range: On application

Purpose of role

The management of the Medical Malpractice portfolio. Delivering on the business plan within the guidance of the Head of Department and adhering to underwriting authorities.

Main areas of responsibility

To be responsible for underwriting MedMal business within a given underwriting authority, specifically:

· The consideration and pricing of cases based on subjective analysis of risk characteristics
· The review and preparation of renewal information for risks based on presentation and claims statistics
· Input and update of financial and risk information into the Syndicate underwriting system.
· Online research/analysis of underwriting data on risks.
· Slip review analysis, broker liaison and rectification of issues raised following receipt from Compliance.
· Representing the organisation at market/client/broker meetings.
· Maintaining and develop broker relations; broker liaison with both London and non-London markets to include (but not limited to) Canada, Asia, Singapore and Australia.
· Awareness of market developments from a technical and personnel perspective.
· Creating, reviewing, updating and agreeing new wordings/clauses/endorsements.
· Liaising with Counsel/Legal regarding the drafting of wordings/clauses and endorsements.
· Liaising with Regional Underwriter for regional development opportunities.
· Liaising with external legal representatives on underwriting issues.
· Representing the organisation by regular attendance at external seminars/conferences/networking opportunities.

Core capabilities

· Confidence in presenting to others and representing the company.
· Communicates well both verbally and written.
· Willing to travel overseas for up to two weeks any one trip on corporate business.

Technical expertise

· Possesses strong analytical skills
· Has an understanding of financial issues and the key performance indicators that drive the business plan and determine the organisation's success.
· Understands the legal, financial and regulatory issues which affect the line of business.
· Has the ability to negotiate to a mutually successful outcome.

Education and experience

· Have highly proficient underwriting skills.
· Has broad, strong market contacts.
· ACII qualified or working towards completion.
· Likely to have at least three years' experience in Medical Malpractice or Life Science/Clinical Trials.
· Marketing and product development.
· Basic knowledge of actuarial pricing and being able to liaise with actuaries.
