Hospital Deputy Ward Manager
Cheswold Park Hospital is currently looking for a competent Deputy Ward Manager to work on our Medium Secure Learning Disability Ward.

Summary of Purpose
To support the Unit manager in all aspects ensuring high standards of Care delivery and compliance.
To motivate, support and enable the Ward Teams to achieve targets, in financial terms and environmentally.

To ensure that systems are developed, maintained and implemented for Clinical Governance and Audit

Hospital Deputy Ward Manager
Main Duties/Responsibilities

Lead and co-ordinate the team to ensure that staff ratio’s and numbers are available for each shift and rosters are well planned.

Deputise for the Unit Manager in her/his absence.

Maintain regular attendance at MDT, CPA MHRT and any other forums relevant to the position

Ensure that all patients have up to date Care plans containing risk assessments that address all areas of need and are regularly reviewed and evaluated.

Ensure that all patients have outcome measures regularly updated as part of their Care Planning and assist in ensuring that these are fed into CQUIN KPI information data sets where required.

Ensure that all Incident reports are checked and are timely, succinct and well written.

Ensure that lessons learned from SUI reviews are implemented effectively and review any policies should they require it.

Assist the Manager in ensuring that all staff take appropriate and timely action where safeguarding protocols are required and that all issues are well documented and learning reviewed.

Assist in co-ordinating and implementing any action plans following Compliance visits such as CQC.


Assist in ensure all relevant KPI’s are met relevant to the Unit

Assist in the co-ordination of assessments and admissions to optimise budget targets and ensure all actions are completed within timescales

Lead on the auditing of the environment and reporting and actioning and maintenance issues within timeframes

Actively encourage patient involvement through the provision of Community meetings, planning meetings and satisfaction surveys.

Human Resources

Regularly evaluate the staffing resource to improve efficiency, supporting the Unit manager in the effective use of staff.

Assist in the development of nursing staff through appraisal and supervision.

Ensure all staff attend mandatory training as required to meet Standards

Assist in management of performance assisting the Unit manager with Return to work interviews, sickness reviews and performance issues.

Lead on ensuring that all Preceptorship Nurses are supported through the process and regularly meet to ascertain development and support mechanisms are working.

Work collaboratively with other members of staff not under direct line management to ensure effective team work and quality service provision in line with service requirements.

Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff liaising with H.R. to ensure all documents and protocols are met.

Health and Safety

Ensure that all staff remain aware of, and attend Health and Safety updates and training.

Assist the Unit Manager in ensuring the audits such as environmental, ligature, cleanliness and infection control are regularly reviewed and any actions carried out in a timely manner

Assists in the maintenance of physical security and safety through regular monitoring and checks. Ensure any actions and/or remedial work is implemented and staff are aware.
