Company Description Kite Power Systems (KPS) is a UK based developer of disruptive, low-cost, wind energy technology whose main shareholders are E.ON, Schlumberger, Shell Technology Ventures and Scottish Enterprise. The KPS power system has two kites that are flown as high as 600 m; their tether is attached to a winch system that generates electricity as it spools out. By achieving flight speeds of up to 45 m/s in 9m/s winds, the kite’s tether tension causes the line to rapidly spool out from a drum, which drives a generator producing electricity. Location Glasgow with occasional travel to the test site in south-west Scotland, as well as other travel the business requires. Salary A competitive salary will be offered, depending on experience. Job Description Kite Power Systems are recruiting an experienced Composites Structural Engineer to work within the KPS Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the structural design of the KPS wing and will work closely with aerodynamics, electrical, and systems engineers to deliver a unique high performance & lightweight wing. The successful candidate will also take a lead on material and build method research for future designs. This is a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project developing a significant new wind energy technology. Role and Responsibilities Design of kite structure using composite material technology Structural analysis of the kite Comparison and selection of materials and joining methods Preparation of 3D and 2D drawings Producing detailed engineering reports Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team Liaising with manufacturers & subcontractors Maintaining parts lists, design records, Bills of Materials etc Required Skills Degree in mechanical or aeronautical engineering (or equivalent experience) Minimum 7 years experience working in a similar environment Significant experience designing lightweight composite structures Excellent knowledge of engineering analysis techniques including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Experience of using appropriate design codes, such as IEC 614000 or EASA CS-23 Experience working in SOLIDWORKS or a similar package Ability to run research programmes looking at materials and build methods Ability to develop test programmes to show compliance with design requirements Excellent English communication skills – verbal and written Ability to quickly integrate into a multidisciplinary team Desired Skills Chartered Engineer status beneficial Experience in wing design beneficial Knowledge of aircraft systems (including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic) Full driving licence Benefits 25 days annual leave per year, plus bank holidays Pensions scheme with up to 10% employer contribution Share Option Scheme
