Vehicle Commissioning Engineer

Our client provides a policing service to the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland 24-hours a day, 365-days of the year.

Position: Vehicle Commissioning Engineer
Location: Leicestershire Force Headquarters
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week
Salary: £21999 - £24030 plus an On-Call allowance

About the role:

As a Force Vehicle Commissioning Engineer to commission and decommission police vehicles including bespoke body conversions and to rectify vehicle body related defects and repair appropriately. All activities to be undertaken in support of Policing Operations.


- Undertake vehicle component mechanical and electrical diagnosis and repairs as required, and to do so in accordance with Force procedures, workshop management and supervision advice, and manufacturers stated instructions
- Diagnose faults and defects with the aid of diagnostic and other equipment and rectify such faults in an efficient and effective manner
- Undertake road tests of vehicles as necessary following repair tasks
- Seek assistance and advice when necessary, from workshop management in cases of repair difficulties or where extensive / expensive repairs are identified
- Refer to and utilise manufacturers and local technical and procedural specifications / information in the commissioning, body conversion and repair of vehicles
- Undertake Quality Control Checks on all newly commissioned vehicles, prior to deployment
- Liaise with the Workshop Co-ordinator at the commencement of duty to receive guidance / instructions on vehicle commissioning and related repair priorities
- Fit, maintain and repair iR3 vehicle telematics system equipment on vehicles and motorcycles including road-tests as required in liaison with the Workshop Co-ordinator

About you:

- A motor industry qualification equivalent to Level 2 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Auto Electrical) or equivalent work-based experience
- Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent
- Experience in modern vehicle body component fault diagnosis, i.e. locking, parking and restraint systems etc. and resultant repairs, including the use of electronic diagnostic equipment as required
- Extensive practical experience in sheet metal working, interior vehicle body conversion or general engineering, utilising specialist tools and machinery including welding
- Experience in the fitting and repairing including painting, of vehicle body panels and associated vehicle equipment
- Hold a full driving licence for cars and vans
- Have a working knowledge of COSHH regulations
- Have a competent knowledge of Health and Safety requirements within a workshop environment


- Hold City and Guilds Vehicle Technician or equivalent vehicle body repair qualification
- Have served an apprenticeship or equivalent training programme or have appropriate experience to a comparable standard in: Mechanical Technician; Vehicle Body Repair; Coach Building
- Experience of working on emergency service vehicles and the fitting of electrical emergency warning
equipment and related equipment including iR3 tracking systems
- Experience in the design and application of emergency service vehicle livery
- Hold an LCV driving licence or Motorcycle licence
