The first of four, our Hatfield fulfilment centre is our most established major distribution depot. This site is an automated warehouse where all Ocado products are stored. It also facilitates our customers’ orders which are picked and dispatched, using highly sophisticated systems and processes, enabling Ocado to deliver in one hour time slots. In order to run such an operation, a skilled and dedicated team of engineers must be on hand to carry out maintenance and repairs at all times.

Your role as the Engineering Team Manager will include:

  • The day to day supervision of Shift Engineers, Technicians and Maintenance shift members including prioritisation and allocation of workload
  • Working closely with inbound, outbound, and other support teams on a daily basis to ensure direction of labour, and planned engineering activities to fully support the operation.
  • Advising, leading and motivating your team members.
  • Assessing your team's capability and identifying and resolving training and skill requirements
  • Involvement in disciplinary issues.
  • Assisting in upskilling and training of staff, including integration of first line maintenance of plant and equipment.
  • Management and development of department processes; including shift handovers, briefs, and defect reporting/resolving
  • Reporting and monitoring of data capture for automation and maintenance activities
  • Leading from the front to drive pace accuracy and standards.
  • Using your experience as a competent and experienced Engineer (either mechanically or electrically) to enable decision making.
  • Candidate Requirements:

  • Good technical ability relating to automation hardware and software
  • HNC Engineering, equivalent relevant Degree coupled with relevant applied learning, Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, Electrical and/or mechanical skills preferably gained in an FMCG background to at least NVQ 3
  • Experience at a management or supervisory level within an automated environment
  • Good organisational ability and the ability to plan and prioritise.
  • Sound analytical skills with an eye for detail
  • Good problem solving ability and a practical approach.
  • Comprehensive understanding of production, picking and storage MHe systems, gained from experience in an automated environment.
  • Experience of working with Computerised maintenance management systems
  • Numerate and PC literate including Word, Excel etc.
  • This role will require flexibility due to us being a 24/ 7 operation and a shift pattern will be put in place that will require working days, nights and weekends. 42 hours per week
