Thames Valley Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the Thames Valley area covered by the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. It is one of the largest territorial police forces in England.

This is a brand new opportunity to join the Information and Communications Technology department that has the responsibility to support front line policing, crime investigation and delivering service improvement across Thames Valley Police and Hampshire Constabulary for the benefit of the public.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced System Engineer who will be responsible for supporting and maintaining an estate of Microsoft Windows enterprise environments. You will need to undertake the design, installation, upgrading, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of server, storage and client delivery infrastructure to deliver service improvement and cost. It is important to proactively ensure all systems are documented and comply with disaster recovery requirements to provide the Forces with the best operational protection. You will mentor others in all aspects of current and correct operational practice to ensure a consistent approach is adopted within the technical specialism.

The Essentials

The following disciplines and technologies are considered essential to the role:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2 and 2016.
  • VMware 6 (including vCenter).
  • Windows 8.1.
  • SCCM 2012, including operating system deployment.
  • SCOM 2012.
  • Experience in Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management to support ICT Service Delivery including system upgrades.
  • The ability to understand how the application of ICT technology impacts the organisation, business objectives and processes, ideally within policing.
  • The ability to articulate technical designs and principles to a Technical and a non-technical audience.
  • Is a recognised practitioner in a number of technical server, storage and client delivery infrastructure technologies
  • Willingness to learn and implement new solutions as per vendor best practices.
  • Good communication skills - written and oral, customer focussed, team-worker, who is a flexible, adaptable, problem solver and able to work systematically and with little direct supervision.
  • Good understanding of ICT Operating Infrastructure and Operations Management.
  • Must have capability to travel to different locations across the Forces. For this reason a full UK driving licence is considered essential.
  • Knowledge of App-V 5/MSI packaging is considered desirable.
