Do you want to learn & develop the skills to become a skilled tradesperson?

Blanchard Wells Group, in partnership with The Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group, Fareham College is offering an exciting new Apprenticeship programme designed to prepare young people and adults for a career in civil engineering occupations.

The Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship (CEGA) will enable participants to develop the skills needed to work in a variety of construction sites, and get paid a wage while gaining a recognised qualification.

This Apprenticeship is suitable for young people such as school and college leavers, or adults who are interested in the construction industry and looking for a new career direction.

As well as providing on-the-job training for students with no prior experience or knowledge of the sector, the Apprenticeship is also suitable for construction staff already working on site who want to gain a formalised qualification and develop their skills for future progression.

HOW IS THE PROGRAMME DELIVERED?

As part of the Apprenticeship, students will undertake an intensive initial training programme at our new Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) in Lee-on-the-Solent. Students will then spend the remainder of the Apprenticeship in full time
employment with one of our partner construction companies, where they will be allocated a mentor to support their skills development. They will also receive regular visits from a CETC Assessor who will review their progress and the completion of the Apprenticeship framework.

CEGA COURSE DETAILS

The Apprenticeship lasts for 2 years, with the first 20 weeks spent at CETC undertaking specific training to ensure students are fully-qualified and ready to work on-site.

As part of this, students will obtain the following certifications and licences, all essential for on-site employment:

  • CSCS card
  • CPCS card
  • Dumper licence
  • Roller licence
  • Abrasive wheels certification
  • Manual handling certification
  • CAT and Genny training
  • Banksman training
  • Driver theory training

The Apprenticeship framework enables students to gain the practical skills and experience needed to work within a variety of commercial and industrial settings, including:

  • Understanding technical drawings and plans
  • Using surveying and levelling equipment
  • Designing and installing temporary works
  • Laying foundations for construction work
  • Making and using concrete types
  • Understanding various stone types and their uses
  • Understanding and laying domestic drainage
  • Installing edgings, kerbs and concrete finishes
  • Laying paving slabs and block paving
  • Safely working around existing services and surrounding environments
  • Basic brickwork and installing ironwork
  • Safe working with construction plant and machinery

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS TO THE APPRENTICE

Considerable benefits are available to CEGA apprentices:
Support to gain necessary entry requirements: Applicants will need to demonstrate they have the physical fitness to work in groundwork operations, a positive attitude, reliability and an enthusiastic approach to teamwork. For students who need support to develop the necessary functional skills to enter onto this course, the option of a Traineeship will be provided. A Traineeship lasts for a minimum of 6 weeks and will enable the student to gain the core skills and English and Maths competency required to progress on to the full Apprenticeship, whilst simultaneously gaining work experience.

Travel support: For the duration of the 20-week training course at CETC in Lee-on-the-Solent, and the duration of the Apprenticeship, a daily travel allowance will be provided.

Rates of pay: Apprenticeships enable students to earn a wage while gaining their qualification. Rates of pay vary depending upon age, but are highly competitive in comparison to other Apprenticeship schemes and jobs in different industries.
