Role Purpose (Summary)

To profitably grow the Casualty account within the Midlands and South West area and to Underwrite business in accordance with the Business Plan

General Description

  • Underwrite insurance risks in accordance with the business plan and personal authority to meet business objectives
  • Participate fully using your expertise to help shape strategy, determine appetite, understand profit drivers to ensure profitable growth of the property account
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues, to maximise influence
  • Develop relationships with key trading partners to support the achievement of business objectives
  • Understand and comply with QBE reinsurance strategy
  • Model behaviours within the team and develop underwriting knowledge within the team
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiency
  • Actively keep abreast of market dynamics and demonstrate market awareness to be able to operate effectively and appropriately

    Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification desired - e.g. ACII
  • Substantial experience gained within the insurance industry and a proven lead Underwriter
  • Thorough knowledge of Casualty underwriting particular in the complex multinational and major client area
  • Innovative in underwriting approach and programme design ideas
  • Ability to develop lasting relationships with clients and brokers and already a recognised trader in the Birmingham market
  • Commercial ability to understand the key profit drivers to maximise long term wealth for our shareholders
  • High level understanding of relevant software and tools, able to interpret the results of risk profiling & pricing systems
  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements as well as technical proficiency on wordings
  • A high level of numeracy, analytical and literacy skills
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to influence actions and attitudes of others through leading by example & people management approach
  • Excellent negotiating skills
