Main Purpose of the Job

To leverage and use technology solutions to enable the organisation's future-state business capabilities that, in turn, drive the organisation's targeted outcomes

Facilitating and orchestrating the delivery of targeted business outcomesDeveloping and leading on technology and process solution design as required by key stakeholders across all Gowling WLG (UK) LLP officesDecision maker on technology direction of travel within the defined technology roadmapsCritical business interface translating technology speak into simple understandable business languageCritical technology interface translating business requirements into a clearly defined solutions design document for internal or 3rd party consumptionDeveloping and maintaining key relationships within BIS and with senior business stakeholders and vendorsProviding deep subject matter knowledge across technologies using their highly developed external network and participation in professional organisationsDirect reports: None

Indirect reports: Lead technology teams as required

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To leverage and use technology solutions to enable the organisation's future-state business capabilities by:

Working with Enterprise Architect (EA) and Subject Matter Expert (SME) peers to analyze enterprise business context (business strategy and trends), as well as change requirements in other enterprise architecture viewpoints (such as business, information and solution) to derive the technology architecture future statethis includes defining the requirements, principles and models that guide technology decisions for the enterpriseUnderstanding business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state), and determining corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organisation's targeted business outcomesDesigning and leading the implementation of a solutions architecture across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities and business requirementsManaging and developing the architecture for a broader scope of projects, working closely with Enterprise Architects (EAs) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) that manage and design architecture for a single project or initiativeProviding consulting support to EAs and SMEs within projects to ensure the project is aligned with the overall enterprise architectureMonitoring the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirementsUnderstanding technology trends and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving operating processes for the businessDriving digital innovation by leveraging innovative new technologies and approaches to renovate, extend, and transform the existing core technology base and IT estateDefining high-level migration plans to address the gaps between the current and future state, typically in sync with the IT budgeting or other capital planning processesUnderstanding, advocating and augmenting the principles of information technology strategiesAnalysing the current business-IT environment (Plan, Deliver, Run) to detect critical deficiencies, and recommend solutions for improvement (systems of record, differentiation and innovation)Analysing the technology industry, competitors and market trends, and determining (and sharing) their potential impact on the enterprise technology architectureCoaching, mentoring and collaborating with SME and EA peers to develop technology architecture that enables and drives new business capabilities and operating modelsDefining the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture visionWorking with the EAs to develop a roadmap for the evolution of the enterprise application portfolio from future to current state (as defined by the solutions architecture)Overseeing and facilitating the research, evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurationsOverseeing or consulting on technology implementation and modification activities (e.g. projects), particularly for new or shared infrastructure solutionsConsulting with EAs and SMEs to ensure application and infrastructure development projects harmonise with systems/infrastructure architecture, and identifying when it is necessary to modify projects to accommodate the solutions architectureHelping the enterprise architect define metrics to measure and demonstrate enterprise technology valueidentifying the organisational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architectureConsulting with the Information Security Officer to ensure that any proposed software developments or changes do not compromise the security of the firm’s dataunderstanding security requirements and issues, and identifying encryption and controls needed to protect informationadhering to privacy by design principles, enabling use of test data, pseudonymisation and encryption at rest, ability to delete databuilding in full auditing and error logging to any applications or customisationsability to output logs of security events to security monitoring softwareprioritising security above functionality and performance, whilst being pragmatic and taking a risk based approachLiaising with external providers to resolve any issues in the functionality and interoperability of new applications, infrastructure and other services with existing IT systemsCollaborating with business and BIS staff as needed to fulfil the responsibilities defined aboveleveraging SMEs from any other needed technical areaTo perform a professional service delivery by:

Coordinating overall project scope, complexity and planning for project developmentEnsuring a high quality and accurate approach is maintained through to software releaseLiaising with Solution Delivery Managers on status, risks and issuesProviding estimates to Portfolio Team for project scheduling purposesWorking closely with and providing regular feedback to the Solutions Delivery Manager and Portfolio Manager to ensure the work is carried out in accordance with the planned timeframe, budgets and quality requirements – and so corresponds with what is being promisedSubmitting daily timesheetsDesigning and directing the governance activities associated with solutions assurance and compliance with the existing (and any planned) service operationMaintaining knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; attending professional conferences and events; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organisations such as ILTA and LitigParticipating in knowledge gaining and sharing amongst Enterprise Architects, Digital Innovators, SMEs, Developers, other Solutions Architects and SMAs by utilising corporate membership of industry bodies and knowledge providers (e.g. Gartner)Participating in, contributing to and networking within a BIS ‘Community of Interest’ relating to the chosen core technology platform areaEducating peers, including with current business and technology trendsTo create and develop (or assist in creation/development) the educational materials relating to the technology platform changes including:

Documenting all the platform developments/changes, including the technology architecture design and analysis work, possibly including project post-mortem documentation and metric collectionTo support the Technical Delivery Manager and BIS by:

Performing any other reasonable tasks as requested, including requests from other senior BIS leadersPerforming the Service Delivery Out of Hours Support (OHS) ‘Duty Manager’ role on a rota basisSupporting Service Delivery with global incident management, business continuity and resolutionResponding to service incidents/BAU (RUN tasks) as required by the Service Delivery Business Partners – this should always be the highest priority for all BIS staffKey skills and experience

Ideally a graduate qualified in computer science/information systems or related fields and/orThree or more years of IT and Business User experience, with sensitivity and commitment to business problem solving - ideally experience of working with a range of technologies (including Microsoft) within business/operations areas of the legal profession or other professional services, with a global componentA minimum of two years of demonstrated competency in a solutions architect role involving maintaining and improving existing IT/Information systems, solutions and services along with the successful execution of multiple projects for new systems, solutions and services includingat least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or operationsexposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environmentsknowledge of components of an enterprise technical architecture, infrastructure and network architectureenterprise IT support experience (ideally on a large scale)ideally experience of Agile or iterative development methodologies (such as DevOps)ability to work with developers in an in-and-out outsourced environmentExcellent planning and organisational skillspreparing proposals that are acceptable to the technical and business areasability to provide reliable work estimatesGood understanding of strategic and new and emerging technology trends, and the practical application of existing, new and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating modelsExcellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical people at all levelscomfortable dealing with key customer decision makers such as IT Directors, project managers and business staffstrong technical writing abilityability to assist with delivering consultancy and technical adviceStrong analytical, diagnostic and problem-solving skills with the ability to absorb new information quicklyAbility to excel in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and evolving marketplaceMethodical with excellent attention to detailAbility to adapt to various internal and external situations and deliver high quality serviceTeam player, providing support to colleagues and managers and working with teams across the firmFlexible approach with a customer and business focusStrong leadership, facilitation and negotiation skillsExperience of working within a matrix organisation, including reporting into a number of people including technical line managers and project managersEvidence demonstrating ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure of deadlines including expertise in prioritising competing workloads
