Main Purpose of the Job

To develop and coordinate all aspects of the enterprise architecture, including:

Business architecture, which is focused on guiding people, process and organisational changeInformation architecture, which is focused on the consistent sharing of information across the enterpriseSolutions architecture, which is focused on developing a direction for managing the portfolio of to-be solutionsapplication architecture is a subset of solutions architecture – it is the discipline that guides application design and defines application architecture paradigms, such as service-oriented architecture (SOA), principles that influence design decisions and patterns that provide proven design solutionsTechnical architecture, which is focused on evolving the technical infrastructureSecurity architecture, which is focused on managing IT risk through the exchange of information between people, systems and things inside and outside the organisationTo take accountability for managing and balancing the enterprise architecture to run, grow and transform the business

Maintaining and evolving future-state business capabilities with a focus on efficiency and predictability of the existing IT estateDesigning and enabling future-state business capabilities with a focus on technology disruption, speed, agility, and flexibility that enables and drives new business models and designs, while meeting today's business needsDirect reports: None

Indirect reports: Lead/support technology teams as required

Budgetary / financial responsibility: To be agreed with the Head of Function and in accordance to the budgetary and financial authority limits of the firm.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To develop and coordinate all aspects of the enterprise architecture, and to take accountability for managing and balancing the enterprise architecture to run, grow and transform the business

Leading the creation or evolution of the enterprise architecture programme/functionPromoting the business value of the enterprise architecture programme/function and its process, and the results of the enterprise architecture programme to business and IT leaders/executivesLeading the development of an implementation plan for the enterprise architecture based on business strategy and requirementsSeeking opportunities to highlight how digital business initiatives will potentially impact enterprises' economic architecture and metricsUnderstanding the business's economic and financial levers that are susceptible to digital transformation, so as to effectively support and guide technology investment decisionsDesigning and constructing future- and current-state business models so as to practically apply new and emerging technologies to drive themIdentifying potential competitive threats from digital enterprises that are generally considered outside of your traditional realm of competitionDemonstrating the business value of EA as an enabler of strategy formulation, and as support for technology innovation, which drives the organisation's top and bottom linesFormulating, translating, advocating, supporting and executing business strategy to achieve the organisation's desired business outcomesScanning the world for major disruptive technology and nontechnology trends (trendspotting) that affect business, and providing practical advice and best practices to overcome these challenges and successfully deliver the expected business outcomesLeading market research, procurement and delivery of solutions from third partiesContextualising the technology trends based on social, economic, political and other nontechnology trendsDetermining the relationship between people, processes, information, technology and things of the enterprise, and their relationships to one another and to the external environmentWorking with business peers to develop and present business capability models and roadmaps to facilitate discussion and decision making with stakeholders across the enterpriseLeading analysis of the business' future-state capabilities and future (and current) IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement and driving the business forwardWorking with business peers and leading the identification and analysis of enterprise business outcomes and drivers to derive useful business context, and in response to disruptive forcesDeveloping diagnostic and actionable deliverables that help business guide investment decisions in support of executing business strategyLeading analysis of the IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvementProviding perspective on the readiness of the organisation to change and innovatePresenting a gap analysis and/or IT investment roadmap that reflects the status of the existing IT estate, namely, its ability to contribute to future-state business capabilities around ecosystems and digital platformsLeading the development of an implementation plan for the enterprise architecture based on business requirements and IT strategiesLeading and facilitating the creation of governance, assurance and standards to guide EA decision makingOverseeing the evaluation and selection of enterprise architecture standards, as necessaryOverseeing enterprise architecture implementation, continuous improvement and ongoing refinement activitiesConsulting with infrastructure, project and product teams to ensure consistency with the enterprise architecture, as well as identifying when it is necessary to modify the enterprise architectureIdentifying organisational requirements for the resources, structures and cultural changes necessary to support the enterprise architectureOverseeing the documentation of all architecture design and analysis workLeading the development and execution of a communication and education plan for the enterprise architectureAssisting the Head of Architecture and Innovation with communicating the value of the enterprise architecture to the organisationConsulting with the Information Security Officer to ensure that any proposed software developments or changes do not compromise the security of the firm’s dataunderstanding security requirements and issues, and identifying encryption and controls needed to protect informationadhering to privacy by design principles, enabling use of test data, pseudonymisation and encryption at rest, ability to delete databuilding in full auditing and error logging to any applications or customisationsability to output logs of security events to security monitoring softwareprioritising security above functionality and performance, whilst being pragmatic and taking a risk based approachMaintaining knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; attending professional conferences and events; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organisations such as ILTA and LitigParticipating in knowledge gaining and sharing amongst Digital Innovators, Subject Matter Experts, Developers and Solutions Architects by utilising corporate membership of industry bodies and knowledge providers (e.g. Gartner)Participating in, contributing to and networking within cross-BIS ‘Communities of Interest’ relating to the core technology platform areasEducating peers, including with current technology trendsTo support the Head of Architecture and Innovation and BIS by:

Performing any other reasonable tasks as requested, including requests from other senior BIS leadersPerforming the Service Delivery Out of Hours Support (OHS) ‘Duty Manager’ role on a rota basisSupporting Service Delivery with global incident management, business continuity and resolutionResponding to service incidents/BAU (RUN tasks) as required by the Service Delivery Business Partners – this should always be the highest priority for all BIS staffKey Skills and Experience:

Ideally an IT/Information Systems qualified graduate and/or with experience of working with a range of technologies (including Microsoft) within business/operating areas of the legal profession or other professional servicesSeven or more years of IT and Business User experience, with sensitivity and commitment to business problem solving plus demonstrable experience of:knowledge of business models, operating models, financial models, cost-benefit analysis, budgeting and risk managementfamiliarity with information management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, infrastructure and operations, and EA and ITIL frameworksknowledge of business ecosystems, SaaS, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT and predictive analyticsexcellent analytical and technical skillsa strong record of business analysis from idea through to deliveryusing technical knowledge to resolve issuesexpertise in operating with one or more of Gowling WLG’s core technology platform areas and willing to gain an excellent understanding of all BIS core IT systemsexcellent planning and organisational skillsproviding leadership expertise in building cross-organisational consensus with business/operations clients and/or technology providersnegotiating and managing IT contracts with service providers including the associated costsknowledge of all components of holistic enterprise architectureknowledge of business engineering principles and processesfamiliarity with basic graphical modeling approaches, tools and model repositoriesdeveloping external networks (e.g. taking on advisory roles, participating in industry bodies)educating and knowledge sharing with colleaguescontinuously improving own abilitiesThree or more years performing an enterprise architecture role and demonstrating competencies and characteristics such as:Organisationally savvy, and understanding of the political climate of the enterprise and how to navigate obstacles and politicsAbility to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisionsAbility to translate business needs into enterprise architecture requirementsAbility to estimate the financial impact of enterprise architecture alternativesAbility to apply multiple solutions to business problemsAbility to rapidly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologiesReady to think, behave and act in an innovative consulting manner to drive the organisation's digital business strategiesUnderstand and speak the language of the businessInfluential in the organisation and a team playerEffective at driving short-term actions that are consistent with long-term goalsTrusted and respected as a thought leader who can influence and persuade business and IT leadersComfortable, experienced and accomplished at working with business executives, and able to push back in a professional and diplomatic wayHighly collaborative and supportive of business and of its ideals and strategiesVendor- and technology-neutral - interested in business outcomesUnflappable in the face of opposition to architectural idealsPractical in approach to decision making and problem solving that is principle-basedDistinctive blend of business, IT, financial and communication skills, as this is a highly visible position with substantial impactStrong knowledge and understanding of business needs, with the ability to establish and maintain a high level of customer trust and confidenceGood exposure to and understanding of existing, new and emerging technologies and processing environments and how other enterprises are employing them to drive digital businessexpected to have membership of professional organisations, trade or user groups and a pattern of regular attendance at industry conferences to enhance knowledge of current technologyDemonstrated experience and ability in successfully utilizing "soft skills" or "people skills"ability to lead and motivate others;
