Unix Infrastructure Analyst
About the Role
**This role can be based in Croydon OR Hitchin**
As a Unix Infrastructure Analyst you will be providing second and third line infrastructure support of mission critical Linux and Unix servers.
Delivering projects, implementing new infrastructure and resolving technical issues by taking appropriate action will be day to day responsibilities, ensuring that the IT standards, best practice and service level agreements (SLA) are being met at all times.
You will need to monitor the performance of the estate and various enterprise class applications, help ensure that the duty rota is covered, and ensure operational and formal documentation is updated as required. You will also be contributing towards the business continuity planning, review and testing.System and network monitoring, capacity management, resource and workload balancing on shared infrastructure and liaising with suppliers will also be a substantial part of the role.
When it comes to knowledge of UNIX and Linux support, you’ll be a natural, with in-depth experience of operating system fundamentals.
You’ll be able to demonstrate an ability to effectively manage large scale server estates following Infrastructure as Code practices and implementing large scale automation, preferably with experience of working in a DevOps-orientated environment. An understanding of ITIL concepts and the management of incidents and implementation of change will also be required.
You will have the ability to translate business requirements into robust, supportable solutions through both excellent verbal and written communication. Needless to say you’ll be a team player but will also have the ability to work alone as required.
We’ll want you to demonstrate that you can learn new technologies and become subject matter expert and want to share your knowledge one-to one, in workshops and team meetings. The ability to maintain a strategic as well as day-to-day approach to activities will naturally to you, whilst also adhering to local practices/standards but challenging the status quo when required.
On the technical side you’ll be conversant in the use of git with branch/merge workflows for version control of automation scripts, and experience with Continuous Integration tools such as Jenkins or GitLab would be a great help. Your knowledge of RHEL system administration, of load balancing concepts (ideally F5), SSL/TLS including keystores and truststores means that you will be ready to go from day one.
Ideally you’ll have an in-depth knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts and will be able to diagnose network related faults and performance issues.
In addition, a broad understanding of network security, including firewalls (ideally Checkpoint and/or Cisco ASA) as well as knowledge of Layer 7/CA API would also be advantageous, but again not essential for the role.
As a financial institution, we also need you to understand about data classification and data protection, and it’d be helpful if you’re already familiar with PCI-DSS and GDPR.You will also possibly have a degree, HND or equivalent in an IT, computer science or engineering related discipline.
•Ability to effectively manage a large server estate following Infrastructure as Code practices. Knowledge of Puppet and Ansible preferred.
•Experience of using git with branch/merge workflows for version controlled maintenance of configuration and automation scripts.
•Understanding of load-balancing concepts, hardware and software (ideally F5). Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems associated with load balancing web applications.
•Experience of building and configuring full-stack infrastructure for web applications including operating-system, firewalls, load balancers and third party integrations.
•Knowledge of RHEL system administration.
•Knowledge of Continuous Integration tools such as Jenkins or Gitlab.
•Experience of development best practices such as automated testing.
•Microservice best practices (e.g. 12-factor) and use of Docker. Deployment to PAAS platforms (e.g. Kubernetes or OpenShift)
•Knowledge of CA API Gateway(previously “Layer-7”)
•Use of FreeIPA and Kerberos.
•Experience of deploying applications to public cloud (Azure preferred).
•In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts
•Ability to diagnose network-related faults and performance issues (taking network packet traces with tcpdump and Wireshark, and using them to identify problems)
•Broad understanding of network security, including firewalls (ideally Checkpoint and/or Cisco ASA)
