Brief description of role:

The Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is responsible for the UK’s economic growth. Digital, Data & Technology (DDaT) leads the development of a strategy for DDaT investment to deliver the BEIS overall strategy and the Governments Digital Services (GDS) Strategy. DDaT ensures digital solutions are fully supported by the right architectures, systems and service management.

As an experienced Software Developer you will work in-house, contributing to BEIS digital software application development needs while protecting the live estate in a fast paced environment. You will hold a passion for cutting-edge technology and will provide technical direction and innovation to ensure appropriate software solutions are in place to meet business requirements. You will utilise your strong technical skills to lead in providing quality software solutions to the business, as well as the optimisation of current key technologies. You will need to have an aptitude to pick up new skills quickly and a desire to provide coaching and mentoring to Junior Developers within the organisation.

Job Specification:

Main responsibilities:

• Build user centric services to serve a variety of citizen and government needs, taking responsibility for the quality of code you produce and provide support for live services that are in production

• Follow industry best practice and help to implement across BEIS. Implement toolkits and APIs for purposes such as integration, performance optimisation, security and scalability and build automated tests to support our continuous deployment environment

• Share knowledge of tools and techniques with your wider team. Coach and mentor more junior colleagues

• Collaborate and work closely effectively within an Agile multi-disciplinary team, including user researchers, delivery managers, business analysts, architects, product management and others to ensure that design specifications are implemented

Key skills and knowledge required:

Essential Criteria:

• Extensive experience of developing web systems in Scala

• Experience in front-end and/or back-end development

• Understanding of software design principles

• Ability to quickly research and learn new programming tools and techniques

• A systematic approach to solving problems

• Experience of testing to validate solutions

• Exposure to Play Framework and Twirl template engine

• Development experience of front end solution based on JavaScript, JQuery, Angular.js and SCSS

• Capable of designing and maintaining databases using Postgres

• Knowledge of Functional Relational Mapping using Slick

• Experience with Micro-services and distributed system architecture

• Experience of using open source frameworks such as Spring

• Experience of using applications servers such as Tomcat, WildFly, Jetty

• Experience of working on a PaaS environment, ideally GOV.UK PaaS or any other Cloud Foundry based platforms

• Experience of working as a developer within an agile team

• Experience of developing secure web applications

Desirable Criteria:

• Experience of working on government digital services

• Working knowledge of test driven development, continuous integration and continuous delivery
