Our client is an award winning international medical communications agency; they are seeking an experienced medical writer to join their team in London or Cheshire (although some homeworking will be considered) to work on a range of materials for global accounts.

Our client partners with many of the top 20 pharmaceutical clients to create the scientific foundation and clinical communications that support the successful development and launch of their brands. The Medical Writer / Senior Medical Writer (MW/SMW) will be responsible for scientific writing and reviewing and the quality of work produced. Working closely with client services, the MW/SMW will be responsible for creating high-end medical communications pieces for the client, including publications, meeting materials, promotional slides and reports, digital deliverables and patient-centred outputs for journals, congresses, and digital formats.

Medical Writing:

- Clearly identify the communication objectives of a project by working with a more senior member of the medical or client services team, or, if appropriate, by working directly with the client
- Ensure production of high-quality medical writing across a range of communications, such as journal manuscripts, marketing communications (e.g. newsletters, product monographs), meetings-related materials (e.g. abstracts, slides) and new media (e.g. inter/intranet sites)
- Ensure that medical copy is scientifically accurate, clear, and appropriate to the target audience
- Ensure that medical copy is produced in accordance with the client's preferred style and that it meets the communication objectives of the client
- Provide suitable original illustrations to accompany text and ensure that permission to use illustrations has been obtained from the publisher/author

Editing:

- Quality control a colleague's work (to check for grammar, spelling and consistency) before it is sent to the client
- Production edit the final draft (for accuracy, consistency and readability), in accordance with SOPs before it is sent to the client for sign off
- Check artwork
- Adapt manuscripts to journal requirements
- Check references to ensure their accuracy and validity
- Prepare submission packs for manuscript submission

Project Administration and Organization:

- Manage and update project files
- Call, attend and contribute to internal project briefing/discussion meetings
- Where appropriate, attend client meetings
- Assist in producing budgets for projects
- Keep project files and references up-to-date
- Keep the Team Leader regularly informed about the status of projects
- Alert the Team Leader to potential problems on projects and discuss possible solutions
- Attend scientific meetings (e.g. conferences, roundtable meetings and workshops) to provide on-site support, gather appropriate information (e.g. notes, tape recordings) for communication outputs and, where appropriate, manage faculty members

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Degree in a biological or medically related subject, preference for higher degree
- Previous writing experience in a medical communications agency or similar environment
- Excellent technical and medical writing skills
- Ability to provide critical, constructive and timely review of material
- Willingness to mentor more junior colleagues
- Organisational skills and time management
- Working to timelines and within budgets
- Good working knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and medical communications
- Up-to-date knowledge of key compliance guidelines and documentation
- Well-trained in all forms of medical communications and education
- Good PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Reference Manager/Endnote skills
- Great eye for detail
- Able to work independently, to lead where appropriate on certain projects, and to work and interact as part of the team
- Able to identify and act on business development opportunities
