CHIEF RISK OFFICER

Furness Building Society is a financially strong and well established institution based in the North West of England, serving the mortgage and savings markets both regionally and nationally. It has assets of £900m, over 110,000 members and a staff of 180. The Society was established in 1865.

The Board is ambitious to develop the Society commercially. A new Chief Executive and a new Finance Director were recruited in 2017, both from outside the building society sector, to lead a prudently ambitious development strategy. The Society is lending strongly and growing. The Society is well capitalised, has plenty of liquidity and is profitable.

The Board now seek to appoint a Chief Risk Officer to be the driving force to shape and deliver the risk strategy across the Society. This is obviously a broad role with overall responsibility for the management of risk controls within the Society, setting the standards, managing risk exposure and helping the Executive Board to fully understand risk as it relates to a Building Society. This is a technical role and therefore, in addition to delivering key regulatory requirements such as ILAAP ICAAP and TFRMP there will be a requirement to continually assess, stress test and keep abreast of the market as a whole.

Candidates will be experienced risk professionals coming from the environment that provides secured consumer lending. A thorough understanding and working knowledge of credit risk relating to the mortgages sector is a pre-requisite but equally as important is your ability to communicate not only at Board level but throughout the Society as a whole.
