Intellectual Property Senior Associate (non-contentious) (0881)

Team: Corporate – Commercial & Technology Reports to: Head of Commercial & Technology Law Practice (C&T), within BLP’s Corporate Department
Purpose of job

To provide non-contentious intellectual property (IP) law advice to BLP's clients largely in support of our commercial and technology, corporate finance, finance/banking, real estate/built environment and litigation/dispute resolution practices. Clients are in a range of sectors (as will be obvious from the above support areas), but to give more flavour sectors will include: technology, property/PropTech, financial services/FinTech, consumer retail, hospitality and leisure (including hotels) medical devices. The only sectors that BLP does not currently serve are pharma and life sciences.
To develop new sources of work from outside BLP’s existing client base, i.e. to take the role beyond support.
To lead the development of BLP’s non-contentious IP practice, using BLP’s current and future platform as a base.
Note: this is a solely non-contentious IP role. BLP may consider the development of a contentious IP practice later.
Based in London, but a successful leader is likely to have opportunities to develop the non-contentious IP practice in other geographies.

What’s in it for you?

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and career focused non-contentious IP solicitor to really make their mark at a top law firm that is ranked for innovation.
IP is a core part of our commercial business. The C&T practice is largely transactional, but with strong advisory work streams. It represents household name and other clients on a range of strategic commercial, IT, outsourcing, IP, data protection and cyber matters. Clients include: Tesco, Travelex, MasterCard, Ferrero, DXC, Tata Consultancy Services, Direct Line Group, Barclays, Co-op Bank, Securitas/Verisure, Stagecoach, Thames Water, Dentsu Aegis Network, Canary Wharf, Schroders and Dell.
This is an opportunity for you to play a key role in helping to grow our practice in this area.
The C&T practice currently has: five partners, including a dedicated specialist data protection/cyber partner; one Associate Director; four Senior Associates; four Associates; one Newly Qualified Associate (we are expecting to take on one or more NQs in March 2017); and two trainees.

Key responsibilities

To provide BLP with expertise in non-contentious IP law advice, serving as the English law expert in this area of law for the firm.
We are looking for an individual who is a technically excellent IP lawyer steeped in non-contentious IP, but focused on developing their career and – with our support and commitment - taking it to the next stage in due course.
The appointee will not only service existing work from within BLP, but also actively identify and develop new opportunities internally from the firm's entire client base in the UK and elsewhere.
The successful appointee will in addition identify and develop new client opportunities and client targets outside the firm.

Steeped in non-contentious IP.
A demonstrable track record of delivering high quality non-contentious IP advice.
Non-contentious IP specialist with a deep knowledge and experience of: (1) the full range of IP rights (including general patentability, but excluding patent clearance and work that patent attorneys would usually undertake), and(2) the application of those rights in a wide range of transactions and situations, including structuring, ownership, assignment, licensing and other exploitation, and management of IP rights to enable owners to claim and protect them and exploit their commercial value. (We do not expect the appointee to undertake trade mark and patent management that would usually be undertaken by patent and trade mark attorneys.)
Experience and openness to working with clients across a range of sectors.
Track record in a client facing role.

Motivated to grow own client base and demonstrate ability to foster relationships across the wider BLP network in order to win work from key clients of the firm and new clients from outside the firm.
Gives commercially astute, practical, advice and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the legal and commercial issues that clients face.
Ability to support the group’s business plan; interprets market intelligence on specific targets and works with others to convert leads to future business.
