Oracle Tech Lead

A tech lead at esure is responsible for the technical development of one or more of our products and leading the team of developers working on that product. This role is to take charge of our core Oracle applications used for policy management for all our insurance products. The tech stack for these applications is Oracle Forms 11gR2 and PL-SQL running on a Oracle 12cR1 database hosted on the Exadata platform.

esure is growing as a business with an ambitious target of 3M in force policies by 2020 (50% growth). To help achieve this, we have an equally ambitious portfolio of technology projects many which involve exposing our Oracle applications as APIs to new digital apps or integrating Oracle with new pricing engines or data sources.

This role is about 50% ‘hands on’ coding/design and 50% coaching and management of our Oracle developers (6 -10 staff). You’ll be working with Product Managers, other Tech Leads, DBAs and Architects to ensure our Oracle Applications are both meeting business needs whilst also moving in the right technical direction

Key responsibilities

  • Accountable for the technical development of our key Oracle Application (TIA)
  • Working with product managers, DBAs and architects to define the technical direction for TIA
  • Managing a group of developers and ensure they are all aligned to the technical direction of the product and working well as a team
  • Coaching these developers and taking responsibility for developing their capabilities and careers
  • Own technical quality of the product and champion the removal of technical debt
  • Support Product Managers and Delivery Managers in producing roadmaps and estimates
  • Responsible for ensuring your products have a useful, robust automated test suite to support a continuous deployment environment
  • Work with other Tech Leads and teams in Esure, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences across teams
  • Lead by example by building digital and technical products (50% of your time should be design/coding)
  • Taking part in 2nd-line support of applications and platforms, including occasional support outside of office hours
  • Essential

  • Strong experience building Oracle applications and detailed knowledge of Oracle Forms and PL-SQL
  • Strong experience of database design, database performance optimisation and ideally experience of the Oracle Exadata platform
  • Experience of designing, building and scaling mission critical line of business systems
  • Technical design skills and previous responsibility for the technical direction of products you’ve worked on
  • Good estimation skills and able to communicate technical concepts to a non-
  • technical audience
  • Line management experience with strong coaching and mentoring skills
  • Experience working on technical projects within a cross functional team
  • Experience of implementing code quality practices in teams such as continuous
  • integration, unit testing and peer reviews
  • Working knowledge of unix-like operating systems such as Linux
  • Strong knowledge of the use of version control systems such as subversion or git
  • Proven ability to quickly research and learn new programming tools and

  • Worked in an agile team
  • Experience of automated integration and acceptance testing, ideally in PL-SQL
  • System administration experience and knowledge of running and scaling your
