The technical discipline at British Steel includes steel composition design, process design, complaint resolution, research and development, intellectual property and quality assurance. Our technical graduates will rotate across our mills, iron and steel making plants, testing solutions, environment and fuel departments. Trainees will be matched with appropriate work depending upon their area of expertise.

Graduates will undertake a range of tasks such as; measuring the temperature and properties of intermediate and final products, planning and executing changes to process to improve or amend the properties and increase yield, researching, developing and implementing new technologies to monitor product properties, monitoring water and air quality by taking samples across site and making recommendations to meet environment agency requirements.

Technical graduates work closely with manufacturing and commercial teams.

What to expect from the scheme

Induction – you will receive a full induction to British Steel which will include a corporate induction, site tour, networking session, health and safety induction and team working day.Two year scheme – every 6 months you will rotate to a new work area or department.Projects – all graduates are assigned projects to complete during their rotation. The topic of these will depend upon business needs in your chosen discipline.Day-to-day tasks – in addition to, or sometimes instead of projects, graduates will carry out day-to-day tasks within their work area.Training and development – we are committed to ensuring you are fully trained to do the work we are asking you to do. In additional the Human Resources team will provide you with skills to succeed and progress within the business.Chartership – where suitable/required we will support graduates to become chartered or professionally qualified in their discipline.Opportunities – we will provide you with a range of opportunities to take advantage of. Some of our graduates become STEM ambassadors, attend university conferences and meetings, support the Industrial Cadets programme and help out with recruitment of new trainees.Networking events – our large cohort of graduate and placement students means that there is a great network of peers to help and support you and have fun with. We arrange ‘formal’ networking events at least 3 times per year.Coaching and mentoring – all graduates are assigned a mentor. They will be with you throughout your scheme and will support and advise you.Variety – we are a large company with a large number of employees. In Scunthorpe there is a huge integrated steel plant as well as all of the business functions. You will be exposed to everything from iron making to procurement to public relations (PR) to rail rolling.Support and care – the Early Careers Development Team, based within HR, are dedicated to helping and supporting trainees during their scheme. We understand that it can be daunting beginning work for the first time and starting out in your career so we will be with you every step of the way. We even provide advice and guidance before you start and will signpost you, for example, if you need help with accommodation.Our technical graduate scheme is accredited by The Institute Of Materials, Minerals And Mining (IOM3).

How will you progress?

Graduates have a permanent contract from the outset, which means you will move into a substantive position within the discipline at the end of the scheme.

Who are we looking for?

At British Steel we are looking for people who have completed or are working towards a 2:1 in materials engineering, metallurgy, chemical engineering, maths, physics, chemistry, geology or environmental science.Hiring managers are looking for candidates with initiative, enthusiasm and motivation as well as knowledge of the iron and steel making processes.In addition to technical expertise we expect you to demonstrate the following competencies throughout the application and assessment process;
