The Company

BSW Building Services Ltd is a well-established mechanical services contractor operating throughout the South East with its offices in Scaynes Hill, West Sussex. The company has several divisions covering service and maintenance and installation of domestic central heating systems, installation of commercial heating and ventilation systems, installation of renewable heating systems and a residential development division focusing on kitchen and bathroom installations. The company operates in the social housing, public funded and private sectors.

The Role

A great opportunity has arisen to join the Management Team and run the company's small Finance department (2 additional account assistants). Reporting to the Proprietor and Managing Director, you will be responsible for day-to-day running of the accounts office, sales & purchases ledgers, cash forecasting, job costing, VAT, payroll/HR administration, production of management reporting / accounts and producing integrated forecasts bi-annually and carrying out variance analysis.

As Company Accountant your duties and responsibilities will be:

Accounts & Book-keeping
  • Sales Ledger - overseeing all aspects including daily sales, settlement and cash handling / banking, invoicing credit accounts and credit control
  • Purchase Ledger - overseeing all aspects including invoice coding, processing, approval
  • Payments - ensuring suppliers are paid on-time, ensuring appropriate controls and preparing weekly and other payment runs for approval by the Director
  • Stock - ensuring stock-take adjustments are correctly recorded and reported
  • Maintaining cash control and updating weekly cash flow forecast
HMRC
  • Producing and submitting quarterly VAT returns to HMRC
  • Liaising with HMRC on VAT and PAYE inspections
Payroll / Sub-Contractor Payments
  • Supervising Payroll procedures to include the following:
  • Processing leavers and producing P45s
  • Ensuring monthly payroll (c. 50 staff) produced accurately according to basic pay and overtime agreed
  • Processing payroll journals to the relevant nominal codes
  • Making HMRC PAYE/NIC and CIS and pensions contribution payments
  • Producing P60s and P11D calculations
  • Supervising weekly sub-contractor payment run and production of monthly CIS return
Management Accounts,Forecasting & Reporting
  • Producing monthly turnover reports
  • Performing month-end procedures - including reviewing accuracy of postings, reconciling control accounts, calculating prepayments/accruals and other adjustments
  • Maintaining Fixed Asset Register
  • Production of Trial Balance and full month-end management accounts, with variance analysis of performance to budget
  • Assisting with annual audit and statutory account requirements
  • Produce integrated forecasts bi-annually
Job Costing
  • Create a process for producing accurate work in progress figures
  • Create a process for costing of projects across the company
The Person

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and energetic with a positive outlook, be highly organised and efficient, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You will be able to effectively manage your own time and prioritise tasks, be able to self-motivate and inspire enthusiasm within your team, whilst holding team members accountable for their performance. You will be organised and efficient, have excellent IT skills, especially in Microsoft Excel, and be able to produce high-quality financial information efficiently and accurately. You will have previous experience with accounts and payroll software (previous experience using Sage Line 50 would be advantageous but not essential). You may be part or fully qualified ACCA / CIMA / ACA / AAT and in return for this you will receive a salary between £35,000 - £45,000 per annum depending on experience.
