Overview

In this role, you will support the Director, Intellectual Property, who is responsible for helping define, shape and govern the key processes related to intellectual property capture, protection and exploitation across Centrica to ensure operational effectiveness across the Global businesses.

Responsibility for these processes is split across all the business units where our innovations are created, developed and commercialised, and includes working with internal innovation teams and partner organisations within Centrica and external to the Group. You will also help to lead the development and training of key teams to understand what can and can’t be protected through patent activities and other methods of protecting innovation, such as trade secret, design rights etc. whilst managing the process for capturing the innovations, working to draft patent applications, either yourself or with assistance from external resources, and assisting the business to make the most of their IP.

This is a new role in a rapidly growing team of diverse professionals with backgrounds in IP, marketing, communication, technology and IT, as well and business leadership.



The Role

  • Partner with key stakeholders across the business to analyse, identify and implement business process improvements related to Intellectual Property
  • Working with the teams, identifying, preparing and drafting patent applications appropriate to support the various strategies of the business
  • Working with external resources and assist with managing a growing portfolio in dynamic business areas, manage external patent counsel
  • Interface and collaborate with key teams such as engineering teams in Information Systems, Connected Home and DE&P, to help define business processes and support in any change that is implemented, including the IP capture processes and efficiencies
  • Interface and collaborate with key legal support teams
  • Contribute to the growth of IP awareness and knowledge in the T&E team and the wider Centrica community
  • Directly grow the number of patent applications filed across the business
  • Assist with IP aspects of legal agreements
  • Support growth activities and business development teams where appropriate, in particular with IP aspects of M&A and/or due diligence

  • Technical knowledge and experience of protecting computer related inventions

  • Some awareness of business administration and ‘how business works’
  • Credible personality, calm when under pressure and able to respond with positive attitude to difficult or testing circumstances

Education

  • University education, minimum Bachelors degree in physical sciences, computing, mathematics or similar subject
  • At least 2 years as trainee patent attorney, either in private practice or industrial position

Work Experience

  • Proven ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • IT literate and able to communicate and work collaboratively with internal IT professionals
  • Experience of working in a fast paced and complex environment
  • Exposure of working with Global teams a distinct advantage
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Preferably some experience of working life prior to joining the patent attorney profession, although not essential

Certifications

  • BSc (Hons) or better
  • Part qualified Patent Attorney (Highly preferable although not essential for the right candidate)

Salary: £60-80K (dependent on experience), plus upto 40% bonus, £5K Car and excellent benefits package, including flexible benefits cash, up to 10% pension, life insurance etc.
