Principle Engineer - Operability
Would you like to play a key role in the operability and development of submarines for the Royal Navy? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Submarine Operability at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Engineer - Submarine Operability, you will be working as part of a team of engineers driving the solution of complex engineering issues and considerations to improve conditions for future submariners. You will be responsible for various engineering activities across the whole boat area, platform area, propulsion area and related systems dependent upon your area of expertise and experience.
This role will provide you with the ability to utilise and develop your current skills, whilst contributing to large projects of national importance. You will be fully supported in your professional development, with the chance for excellent career progression opportunities in the future.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Submarine Operability will involve:
Liaising with system owners, integrators, the customer and end users optimising functional and spatial design for future submarines.
Covering areas of Whole Boat, Propulsion, Ships Systems, Damage Control and Submarine Escape, Rescue, Abandonment and Survival Systems (SMERAS) dependent upon your area of expertise and experience.
Providing submarine subject matter expertise to product safety activities i.e. HAZIDs, HAZOPs, SWIFTs, Fire Risk Assessments, ALARP pioneering workshops etc.
Supporting the Product Safety team in the review of safety related documentation in support of the Whole Boat Safety Case
Providing subject matter expertise into advanced submarine programme Training Needs Analysis (TNA)
Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer - Submarine Operability:
Operational knowledge serving on the Astute (preferred) or Vanguard Class of Submarine
Demonstrable experience in a supervisory capacity leading people

Maritime - Submarines
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
