Senior Data Manager - Mobile Payments

The Role

This role would oversee the Mobile Payments Programme's data strategy, both in relation to extracting greater value from existing data assets internally, as well the programme's approach to supporting operators on data monetization pathways for financial inclusion.
As a Senior Manager, you will be at the forefront of global debates about how to leverage data to stimulate innovation and extend financial services to people around the developing world. You will be asked to contribute to dialogues and to build a broad network of public and private sector actors, including international aid organisations, mobile operators, regulators, and Fintech companies. You will work alongside a high-performing and multi-cultural team based in London, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. You will author public content that should become the reference materials for public and private sector actors seeking to accelerate the next generation of mobile payments services.
The ideal candidate will have views on the role of data in a world where payments are increasingly commoditized and digital financial services for emerging market consumers are expanding. They will grasp big-picture trends affecting people and businesses in the developing world. They will be self-organising, capable of independently taking on an issue on which few have the answers, scoping and managing a cluster of research projects, liaising with stakeholders, ultimately developing and implementing a holistic strategy for data in digital financial services. Excellence will matter more to them than credit. They will be the kind of person who voluntarily steps up to help others reach their goals in the interest of the broader mission of the programme. They will be passionate about the commercial and social impact potential of mobile payments, to sustainably reach the underserved.
This role will report into the Head of Mobile payments and will play a key role in overall programme leadership and management. Responsibilities for this role will span the entire breath of the programme's data strategy, including but not limited to:
*Designing and managing the delivery of a work stream on data monetization for financial inclusion, which involves mapping of operator data assets and scoping of insights projects on the future of mobile payments

*Overall thought leadership on the commercial applications of data for mobile payments, including producing best practices on mobile credit products and landscaping innovative data applications from Fintech companies

*Refresh the programme's overall data strategy, proposing creative analytics to utilize the full range of data assets, as well as new data visualisation approaches to best support mobile payments industry stakeholders

*End-to-end management of internal database of a decade of mobile payments performance indicators, including associated expansion, information protection, data integrity, and analytical applications of the data

*Effective people management of three to four analysts (virtual and London-based), overseeing and ensuring quality control of core data deliverables, e.g. data estimates and forecasts, interactive data dashboard

*Play an advisory role on Mobile payments reports and deliverables which significantly rely on quantitative analyses and the use of data assets, ensuring adequate resourcing for such projects requiring analytical support

*Represent the firm at public forums to discuss research and insights relating to leveraging data for financial inclusion

Skills profile
*Masters-level education or above, with at least 7 years of work experience

*Proven experience in management and strategic oversight of data assets, including leveraging data assets to meet commercial or organizational goals

*A very strong grasp of the English language, able to express complex data-related issues in plain language

*Proven analytical skills, especially the ability to lead the development of industry trends analyses, as well as assess broader commercial and economic implications

*Charismatic and energetic, able to inspire others and build constructive working relationships with diverse stakeholders

*Ability to work in a matrixed structure, to positively influence peers and support cross functional collaboration across the company.

Desirable but not required

*Educational background in data science, big data, data analytics

*Comfort with statistical analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Tableau, Stata), and large data sets

*Familiarity with the mobile payments and financial inclusion landscape in emerging markets, including the commercial issues facing the industry

*Knowledge of data protection and/or privacy issues relating to financial services

*Experience working for a financial services / payments provider, a company in the mobile communications sector, or an international development organisation

*Ability to handle pressing deadlines and ambiguity; innovates and devises frameworks to resolve and prioritise
