For details of how to apply please see below.

Where? The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology. The SKA is an important international scientific and engineering collaboration for the 21st century. The telescope will be located across South Africa and Australia and the Headquarters will be at Jodrell Bank Observatory in the United Kingdom.

The SKA Organisation has annual income of around £5M and currently employs approximately 70 staff.

We are based at our purpose built offices at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire.

Why?

We’re looking for someone to help keep stuff running to enable some of the best scientists and engineers in the world construct the largest science facility ever built by mankind.

There’s no standard blueprint for one of those, and so the work can be varied - although it’s mostly IT-themed.

Sure, we install software on new laptops, and keep them running - like most places - on Windows, OSX and Linux. We also look after some pretty cool science and engineering software like Matlab and CASA.

We spend a lot of time supporting collaborative tools - especially video conferencing (Vidyo) and a wiki (Confluence). And, of course, we make sure things are backed up and documented.

There aren’t many of us on the support side and so we end up getting involved in all kinds of things, like outreach events, tech testing, running conferences, and even moving furniture around sometimes. In how many other jobs might you be involved in helping to erect a 7m tall inflatable radio telescope dish?

Who?You’ll have done some higher-education in something numerate, and you will most definitely need to be good at people. In this role you’ll be the first person that employees and visitors come to for support and you will be dealing with engineers, administrators and academics from all nationalities and backgrounds.Given the varied nature of this job you have to able to work alone at times and prioritise effectively.

You’ll need a very high standard of English, both spoken and written. And you'll need to be able to focus - attention to detail is really important.

This is a techy job in IT, involving a range of IT skills and knowledge including iPhone stuff, the ability to get things done, sometimes on your own and sometimes with others, and sometimes against a hard deadline.

Our core architecture uses Active Directory and Exchange, with Linux for our web services, so MCSA or equivalent knowledge would be a big bonus and knowing your way around Linux is also important.

It would be nice if you’ve dabbled with computer programming, and like science - especially Astronomy; it’ll really help you to engage with what we’re doing.

This would probably suit you if you are looking for your second or third job in your IT career.

Above all, you’ll need to bring enthusiasm for the project we are running and the desire to help make transformational science happen.

Relevant professional experience may be accepted as evidence of any of the above skills. Please note that this is a hands-on role in which practical experience is a strong requirement.

For more information on the SKA project visit http://www.skatelescope.org. SKA Organisation offers a competitive salary, a generous company pension scheme, and a flexible benefits package. The successful applicant’s workplace will be SKA Organisation’s headquarters at Jodrell Bank Observatory, UK

Informal enquiries may be directed to Paul Furness, IT Manager, on 0161 306 9618
