Mechanical Thermal Engineering within Gas Turbine Systems is a challenging role due to the operating conditions experienced within the turbine. Working within one or a number of multi-disciplinary teams you will deliver world-class component designs by applying the latest analysis techniques software and methods.


You will provide support to the design of Gas Turbine components by calculating Gas Turbine operating metal temperatures and displacements. The Thermals Team also has responsibility for predicting rotor tip and stator vane shroud seal clearances in compressors and turbines. These lead to the definition of cold build clearances. Through these calculations you will support the design and stress communities throughout the engine life cycle starting with preliminary design and continuing until removal from service. As well as the design stages you will have a significant input during engine development.
The types of thermal analysis that will be undertaken range from simple hand calculations 1D spreadsheet based calculations to building and running complex 2D and 3D transient Finite Element (FE) models. You will be expected to get involved in the validation of these calculations against engine and rig data.
You will be required to manage several varied activities simultaneously work in a team based environment have good written and verbal communication skills and be capable of making sound technical judgements and appropriate decisions.

Background & Experience:

Candidates will have a proven track record of delivering effective engineering solutions within cost time and quality constraints. You will be able to demonstrate a strong interest in technical analysis and learning new specialist skills. Competencies required in this role will include: Decision Quality Creativity Technical Learning Composure and Customer Focus. Knowledge of engine core components and principles of operation is desirable but not essential.
Candidates must have knowledge of heat transfer and component temperature prediction methods.
Knowledge of displacement prediction methods and experience with analysing turbo-machinery running clearances is also required.

* Successful candidates will have project experience involving disciplines such as:
o Conduction analysis
o Convection analysis
o Radiation
o Steady state and transient analyses
o Transient scaling
o Absolute relative and static temperatures
o Conservation of angular momentum and work done analyses
o Calculation of heat transfer coefficients
o Validation of predicted results
o Thermal matching analysis
o Sizing and analysis of thermal equipment using hand calculations

* Knowledge of at least some of the following software is essential.
o SC03
o Hypermesh
o CADfix


Candidates should have a Degree / HND or equivalent in Engineering or an associated discipline.
