We are seeking to appoint a research technician to support research activities that are part of the University of Southampton's work in novel optoelectronic materials. The field is of high importance as it aims to transform the UK's manufacturing industries through the integration of novel materials in photonics and electronics. We are seeking a highly-motivated individual, who will join a dynamic and fast paced team of 10 research scientists, post graduate students and technicians working on advanced materials across a number of government and industrially funded projects.
The key post responsibilities include the laboratory and clean room support of several parallel research projects both funded by industry and government. Thin film deposition and material processing will be the prime subject of work carried by the successful applicant. In addition, they will be given the opportunity to undertake work on their own specialty within the field. The post offers opportunities for development in research and laboratory skills and includes general laboratory management and collaboration with external partners including industry.
The skill set required is diverse and a background in laboratory based research with qualifications which include an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, electronics, nanofabrication or related field is essential. Postgraduate degree in the field or previous related work will be a high advantage. You will need good organisational and presentation skills, be familiar with maintaining databases and inventories and good interpersonal and communication skills. The applicant will have to show that they have the ability to analyse data rigorously, draw conclusions and write outline reports. Finally technical skills in laboratory management, cleanroom work, thin film deposition and characterisation are essential to the position.
