Chief Engineer - Research and Innovation
We are seeking a Chief Engineer, Research and Innovation to join our Innovations team at our technical center in Shoreham
As a Chief Engineer, Research and Innovation you will be expected to work in close partnership with project stakeholders at all levels and with the individual project leads and teams to deliver a multi-disciplinary portfolio of projects supporting our automotive, commercial vehicle, marine and industrial sectors and our Rail and Energy and Environment divisions. This role will supporting and guide the whole R&D project life-cycle from involvement in R&D strategy, defining R&D priorities, project definition, value proposition, question-lead research and set-up of the project team through to execution and exploitation. The Chief Engineer will also engage in a wide range of cutting edge research on topics from conventional and electrified powertrains through to vehicle technologies.
The Chief Engineer will also support the ongoing development of a culture of successful and effective research and innovation including coaching, mentoring and skill development for project leaders and other team members.
The Chief Engineer may also be required to lead individual projects where appropriate.
This opening provides a great opportunity to meet customers, attend conferences, support working groups defining future strategy and priorities within organisations such as the Automotive Council and ERTRAC and to visit sites where R&D is being developed and exploited by our customers.
The core responsibilities for this role include full accountability for the delivery of a portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects, managing the risk and commercial exposure whilst ensuring that all projects are completed to time, cost and quality requirements.
You will also be expected to support the generation of multi-disciplinary proposals and bids through to successful conclusion, working closely with in-house engineering disciplines.
Your main tasks and responsibilities would include:
Supporting effective delivery of the R&D portfolio
Thought leadership to identify potential research and innovation topics that support the business strategy
Provide team leadership to ensure that projects deliver to scope and transition from research to commercialisation phases meeting all the company requirements
Mentoring, coaching and developing project leaders to be able to holistically lead and deliver R&D projects
Work with the business units to create projects that have strong value propositions that are consistent with business strategy
Managing and monitoring the R&D portfolio project budgets and forecasts
Managing and monitoring project risk
The role will involve some travel, both UK and international.
The ideal candidate will:
Have significant experience of defining and successfully delivering large multi-disciplinary research projects in an academic or other research organisation
Have experience and expertise in research and innovation methods and to be able to drive these processes through support of the project teams.
Have a broad technical background with a willingness to learn across a broad range of engineering disciplines engine and have demonstrable deep understanding in one or more of those areas
Be a commercially astute project leader with demonstrable track record of leading cross-functional teams to deliver cross-functional projects on time and to budget
Have excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
Have proven stakeholder management skills with demonstrable experience of managing challenging relationships
Have strong communication skills, both oral and written, and must be comfortable delivering presentations to groups of all sizes
Have a natural desire to contribute to continuous improvement within the function
