User Researcher / Newcastle upon Tyne / 6 months Contract / 400 to 450 GBP (Per Day)

General Responsibilities

This role is for an experienced User Researcher, working in agile multi-disciplinary team environments.

They are able to plan and lead research on larger teams and more complex services. They influence service proposition, align user research activities and wider plans, and build user centred practices in new teams.

They generate new and useful insight in relation to DWP’s users, helping to ensure that quality products and services are delivered that meet the needs of the customer base and of the department’s business

They are responsible for maintaining standards in line with the GDS Digital by Default Service Standard, enabling the Department to meet its future strategic vision

They provide mentoring and support to less experienced team members to ensure high quality research and continual improvement in user research practice.

Define the problem and develop appropriate research strategies

Use strong analytical and problem solving skills to understand the business problem and devise appropriate research strategies.

Plan and design user research sessions, testing both high-level concepts and specific aspects of the service as it is designed and developed.

Conduct tailored programme of user research

Conduct research and generate new and useful insight to shape the development of new digital services while maintaining the focus on user needs

Conduct contextual and Discovery research to develop a deep understanding of the needs of all users of a service

Conduct hands-on user research, including guerrilla/pop-up testing, moderating usability sessions and interviewing

Lead usability testing

Conduct usability testing, including developing user recruitment briefs, test moderations, analysis and report writing

Work in agile, multi-disciplinary teams

Be highly visible within a multidisciplinary team of designers, analysts and developers, promoting user-centred design principles.

Be confident in explaining user needs to colleagues, and act as a persuasive advocate for those needs both within the team and the department at large.

Deliver at pace, with a commitment to agile and continuous iterative development to improve the experience for users

Work with wider colleagues and stakeholders

Work closely with a large number of stakeholders across the Department’s different functions, including corporate and operational functions.

Work closely with web analytics and other insight colleagues to integrate customer data and research findings

Communicate and present research findings effectively

Present research findings in compelling and innovative ways, making business/design recommendations based on sound analysis.

Willingly and ably challenge the status quo, and empower other team members to challenge their own assumptions.

Persuade teams to take action based on research findings

Build user research capability

Coach and mentor User Researchers to ensure individuals continuously learn and develop; and that we provide a first class user research service.

Deliver user research awareness training at the Digital Academy and other learning events.

Build and promote the user research community

Be an active member of the User Research community, sharing best practice and knowledge and reusing insight where possible.

Be involved in the wider User Research community across government. Attend conferences and hacks and blog where appropriate

Essential Skills

Research skills

  • User Researchers have a proven track record in user research and are experienced in using a variety of user researcher methodologies to build a rich picture of customers and other user groups.
  • Extensive experience of conducting user research and the research process including: drafting discussions guides; recruiting respondents; organising test venues and mobilising resources; carrying out guerrilla/pop-up testing; interviewing; and moderating focus groups and usability (lab) test sessions.
  • Able to create exciting research stimulus and paper prototypes

  • Up-to-date understanding of what makes for good web design; prototyping skills; experience of working with web analytics
  • Accreditation & Qualifications

    A degree or professional qualification in a related field such as Psychology, Social Research, Market Research or User-centred Design; or equivalent professional experience
