Design Engineer (Medium Voltage Switchgear)

Position: Design Engineer
Location: Thame, Oxfordshire
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week

About the role:

As Design Engineer you will be responsible for designs on projects for new product development or special product development projects under the direction of the lead Engineer, and in collaboration with the laboratory and industrialisation teams in the UK and all our other sites.


- Working with all other Engineering teams to resolve product issues; working with all other teams in Lucy Electric to ensure effective problem solving - with a focus on meeting customer needs profitably
- Determining plans and mechanisms to deliver against your own objectives including ongoing problem solving.
- Undertake the development of allocated switchgear designs, including drawings and Bills of Materials, understand and implement Engineering Changes through our own change management system
- Application of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to all product development
- Be involved in and understand the scheduling of internal and external testing: supervise as appropriate working with the Laboratories team
- Maintenance of all test results and acting upon them
- Production of design documentation and maintenance of project files
- Correcting finished product Bill of Materials (BOM) using Engineering systems to capture as appropriate
- Accountable for proactive continuous improvement of the product / cost ratio and in the utilisation of new processes and technologies which enhance the safety and economics of the finished product
- Seek development opportunities and experiment with new approaches and practices to stay current in a New Product Design Environment
- Guarantee the delivery of the business strategy, by ensuring you manage delivery of your own objectives and prepare for your regular performance management meetings
- Strive to improve the overall financial and key performance indicators of the business

About you:

- Engineering knowledge preferably in medium voltage switchgear or a related subject
- Knowledge of switchgear design or a related discipline
- Awareness and an understanding of relevant International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards
- Knowledge of strength of materials
- Driven to apply DFM to all product development
- 3D CAD skills, preferably NX and TeamCenter PLM
- Experience of working in a multi-national, matrix organisation.
- Good communications and presentation skills, creative with a commercial awareness
