Application Support and Deployment Engineer - Bradford

The Role:

Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, the Application Support and Deployment Engineer is responsible for the provision of third line support in the validation, investigation and resolution of incidents. You will also deploy product releases to meet established schedules within multiple client agreements.

KEYRESPONSIBILITIES;

This does not set out every responsibility but provides an overview of the main areas of responsibility.

Application Support:

  • Be the subject matter expert on the deployed products and respective environments and provide support as and when required. Working with the DBA team and Service Desk to support the validation, investigation and resolution of incidents
  • Utilise testing and quality assurance skills
  • Liaise closely with development and technical teams to understand issues that are being fed through from clients
  • Communicate these issues back to all stakeholders, and act as a conduit between the Service Desk, Application Support and Deployment and Development teams
  • Implement workarounds by establishing if there are temporary ways of overcoming difficulties
  • Utilise basic knowledge of .NET, XML, and SQL Server
  • Diagnose the root cause of problems; check to see if the problem has occurred before; recreate the failure on a test system
  • Minimise the adverse effect on the business of incidents and problems caused by errors in the infrastructure and pro-actively prevent the occurrence of Incidents, Problems and errors

Deployments:

  • Deploy product releases to meet established schedules within multiple client agreements. Work on deployment to UAT servers as well as to Live Servers. Maintain multiple environments and infrastructure configurations, as well as UAT and Live Servers
  • An in-depth understanding of the technologies in use (hardware and software) is essential for troubleshooting issues in any deployment (see ?Skills / qualifications required? section below for minimum requirements for the role)
  • Contribute and work to release and deployment plans
  • Ensure that products are fully deployed and implemented to the highest quality
  • Contribute to the maintenance related release elements and patches that go into the deployment plan
  • Ensure client specific configuration documents are updated accordingly and signed off prior to the release
  • Have an understanding of the software development process, and identify inherent dependencies created by the development process that may not be readily obvious
  • Attend Deployment meetings and any related meetings for Releases/Sprints
  • Coordinate with Development to ensure that packages for deployment are provided in a timely manner (the onus being on Development to meet this requirement)
  • Feed into the process to assess the risks and issues associated with releases, communicate these to relevant teams and ensure deployment plans include mitigating actions
  • Understand the impact that delays and defects have on clients, and in acknowledging the implications of delays, work with colleagues to minimise the risk of delays / defects occurring

Skills and Qualification Required:

  • Thorough understanding of Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012
  • Thorough understanding of networking, protocols and technologies used (Firewalls/LB?s, etc)
  • Thorough understanding of IIS (understanding the configurations within IIS, both application pool and website specific)
  • Intermediate understanding of SQL Server, basic SQL scripting
  • Good understanding of SQL Server Tools, profiling SQL, checking resources, etc
  • A solid understanding of API?s and application interactions (specifically an end-to-end understanding of the process used with web services and the corresponding actions of SQL or .Net) Solid technical
