Welding Technician

The role

You will be supporting the welding manager and welding engineer in the timely and correct delivery of all aspects of welding and material engineering duties. This will include the design and implementation of welding procedures and new business system. You will assist in conducting root cause analysis of shop and site welding/ material difficulties.

The role will require you to liaise with customers and travel to sites to provide technical support, the occasional stop over will be required.

You will receive training and one to one mentoring that builds on your current educational/ experience level, initially geared towards becoming a technical expert that is able to apply their knowledge in a variety of settings; The ideal candidate will be working towards chartership status with the future possibility for progression to welding engineer and above.

Main activities:

- Keep abreast of welding development and best practices.

- Assisting the Welding Manager in reviewing contract requirement related to welding. Provide comments/ feedback to commercial and product department on welding topics specification/ procedure/ tenders.

- Liaise with third part inspection authorities whenever required for the project and issuing any necessary work orders for inspection and/ or testing.

- Assist in writing PWPS'S and WPQR'S AND WPS'S. Updating and maintaining the files of approved WPS's.

- Authorised to stop processes if they do not meet specified requirements,

- Raise non-conformity reports, performing root cause analysis and approving re-work processes.

- Collate, update and file documents relevant to welding engineering.

- Issue, maintain and revalidate welder's qualification rest records (WQT's).

- Assist the welding manager in providing expertise in development of specific procedures, techniques, check lists, sequences or any other welding related requirement.

- Liaise with the Quality Engineers/ Supervisors/ Inspectors, Project Managers, Production Supervisors and Client Representatives whenever required for the project.

- Perform other role related duties as assigned by department head.

Qualification and Skills

Skills

- Knowledge of ferrous materials

- Knowledge of non-destructive testing and mechanical testing methods.

- Knowledge of welding, fabrication, pipelines and structures.

- Capable of interpreting international codes & standards on welding and testing.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, communication and self-confidence.

- Computer literate specification knowledgeable of MS Work, Excel and Outlook.

- Responsible, conscientious, punctual, highly organised and self-motivated.

- Ability to work under pressure, both on own initiative and as part of a busy team.

- Ability to handle multiple varied projects from order through to completion.

Qualification

Degree/ Foundation Degree/ HND/ HNC/ in Welding, Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering and/ or IWS/IWT/IWE qualification issued by The Welding Institute (TWI).

Other requirements

Some travel within the UK to site locations will be required

Full driving license

Professional registration and profession to Eng Tech/ IENG/ CENG will be encouraged.
