VMware Infrastructure Architect / Designer

We have a long-term contract opportunity for an experienced VMware Infrastructure Architect / Designer to design and deliver innovative infrastructure solutions in specialist area(s) of expertise: desktops, Wintel servers, mid-range, storage, network security, voice and data networks.

Your role will be to lead and help co-ordinate the delivery of innovative infrastructure solutions across multiple technologies in an Enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities of the VMware Infrastructure Architect / Designer

  • Production of high and low-level designs for complete infrastructure solutions typically based on standard solutions spanning one or more of the following technologies: desktops, Wintel servers, midrange, storage, network security, voice and data networks.
  • Production of cost and resource estimates at the appropriate level of accuracy.
  • Supporting the project managers in progressing work on the detailed design, development, build, test, implementation and handover to support for new infrastructure components and solutions.
  • Document infrastructure deliverables / components / processes according to applicable standards.
  • Attendance at design and other forums representing Infrastructure Project Organisation / Technology Change.
  • Leading small to medium sized work teams, project teams and meetings.
  • Help resolve issues affecting the infrastructure including performance, process and service issues.

Competence / Knowledge / Skills required for the VMware Infrastructure Architect / Designer

  • Demonstrable ability to identify, analyse and solve problems in a logical and effective way, including root cause analysis and actions to solve the problem
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively at all levels, including oral, written, presentation and the ability to successfully influence others;
  • Demonstrable ability to prioritise and manage effectively your own workload and that of a small team.
  • Understands accountabilities across large projects/programmes and tasks. Can deal with ambiguity and uncertainty. Can identify conflicts.
  • Positive approach to customer care.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and current technology trends. Demonstrates detailed knowledge of trends within their particular area(s) of technical expertise.
  • Successful demonstrable experience of working on the design and implementation of a significant infrastructure transformation project involving multiple technical disciplines.
  • In depth practical design and hands-on engineering ability with Wintel server technology.
  • Excellent demonstrable understanding of Microsoft server technology, including clustering, TCP/IP networking, WINS/DNS, IIS and MS SQL and working with these in an Enterprise environment. Evidence of successfully implementing or transforming in an Enterprise environment.
  • Excellent demonstrable understanding of Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft's security model (GPO, NTFS, File Shares, Domain structures, User rights, directories) and their use in an enterprise environment. Evidence of successfully implementing or transforming in an Enterprise environment.

Desirable skills and experience for the VMware Infrastructure Architect / Designer

  • Ideally will have a degree qualification.
  • Ideally will have obtained technical qualifications in one or more areas of expertise.
  • Evidence of continually learning new technologies / maintaining their technical knowledge over their career to date.
  • MCSE Windows Server
  • MCSE Exchange
  • VMware VCP
