The role

In this role you will need to provide assurance that software used by the
organisation is fit for purpose. To ensure that proposed software or schema updates do not adversely impact on the authenticity and integrity of digital collection content. You will also help be a trustworthy digital repository capable of preserving its digital collections for the very long term

Main tasks
1.Produce, develop, and maintain a reusable, standardised testing process for preservation tools and processes
2.Analyse and evaluate the preservation effectiveness of workflows and tools used to process digital collection content
3.Maintain a software analysis environment for repeatable and reproducible testing of software tools
4.Deploy and configure software for testing within the software analysis environment
5.Obtain and manage appropriate sets of digital collection content for use within software testing processes
6.Sign off new tool releases prior to deployment
7.Ensure all testing processes, tests, and test results are fully documented and maintained in a test documentation database.
8.Advise on deployment and configuration settings to maximise effectiveness of tools in line with expected test results
9.Engage with the wider technical digital preservation community and exchange knowledge and best practices in preservation software testing
10.Participate in externally organised hackathons or similar events to support tool improvement
11.Maintain awareness of developments and advances in digital preservation software solutions and their potential for use within the organisation
12.Apply deep technical analysis and expertise to digital preservation challenges and solutions, within the context of a Research & Development programme.
13.Commit to team working, achieving results, and cross-boundary working
14.Demonstrate a willingness to take on a range of tasks and to develop new skills, as appropriate, in own or other departments/directorates to support the delivery of the organisations services as required by line management.

Minimum requirements (essential)

*Computer Science, Software Engineering or technically related degree, or equivalent experience
*Strong understanding of software development using object-oriented languages (preferably Java), and scripting languages such as Python, Perl or Bash
*Enthusiasm for long term digital preservation and an understanding of its underlying principles
*Experience with software testing, identifying appropriate tests required, managing test data and evaluating the outcome
*Experience in installing, configuring and evaluating software against business and technical needs
*Demonstrable analytical skills and aptitude for desk-based research
*Excellent organisational and decision-making skills, able to manage competing priorities under pressure and achieve own goals or those set by others
*Ability to work independently and deconstruct large challenges into achievable chunks of work in order to deliver timely solutions
*Strong team working skills
*Able to work as part of a cross-site team in a matrix management context
*Ability to reason insightfully when presented with a technical problem and present coherent argument for chosen way forward
