Systems Engineer

Nottingham - £45000 - £55000 plus benefits

Do you have strong Linux and object oriented programming skills? Do you have DevOps experience or are you looking to move into this area?

If so, I have a role in Nottingham that might be of interest. You would be joining an expanding software development team supporting internal and external development projects. Previous DevOps experience is not essential but you will need to have strong experience with Linux and an interest in moving into DevOps.

You will be working in a fast paced organization using Agile/Scrum methodology to deliver excellent solutions for our demanding customer service and operations requirements.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Development team to bring new software releases to production more effectively
  • Develop and deploy OSS tools for use within the Cloud Operations group
  • Develop, deploy and manage a highly-scalable and high-availability platforms monitoring and maintaining service performance and availability metrics
  • Automate everything from deployment to monitoring and management to incident response
  • Take ownership of our configuration management platforms
  • Collaborate with developers to bring new features and services into production
  • Assist identifying and mitigating security threats to comply with a strict security compliance
  • Develop and improve operational practices and procedures
  • Produce high-level design documentation where required
  • Ensure close collaboration between Development and Operations, enabling smoother operation between teams

Required Skills and Experience

  • Lateral thinking, reverse engineering, good at problem solving
  • Obsession for good documentation: using wiki to log changes, write procedures and instructions
  • Programming skills and have strong interest in DevOps, Systems Engineering or Build and Release Engineering
  • Strong Linux administration: Ubuntu / Debian, Redhat / CentOS
  • Configuration management tools - Chef / Puppet / Ansible
  • Version control systems - Git / SVN / SourceControl / CVS

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Virtualisation technology - AWS, VMware - Hyper-V - Xen
  • Experience with issue tracking - JIRA / Bugzilla / CVStrac
  • Continuous integration tools - Jenkins, NAnt, MSBuild, Maven
  • Agile / Scrum Development
  • Experience with using Docker containers
  • Caching Technologies - Memcached - Couchbase - Varnish
  • WSO2 Carbon - ESB - Identity Server - API Manager
  • Monitoring systems - Cacti, Nagios, Splunk, Zenoss, FusionReator
  • You've built monitoring for production infrastructure
  • Experience supporting Development teams using JSon, REST, Soap, XML, Ajax
  • MySQL and MSSQL DBA skills as well as NoSQL solutions
  • Knowledge and experience of working with package management systems like RPM, .deb, etc
