IT Apprenticeship - ICT/AV Infrastructure Technician Apprentice - Birmingham

Why IT? One of the most essential departments in any organisation is its ICT service, and this is a fantastic apprenticeship opportunity to work in ICT Support and for Holy Trinity Catholic School. Virtually every member of staff and student uses IT every day for their work. They need the IT Support Service and Help Desk to provide immediate support for any problems they may have so that their work is not affected. As a member of the ICT Support team, you?ll be an invaluable member of the entire organisation.

The Role

On the IT Support team, as an ICT Infrastructure/AV Apprentice Technician you'll support a wide range of school business applications and devices. You will be the first point of contact for all IT related queries which will include taking calls, responding to staff and students on a range of issues such as supporting mobile devices, software installation and classroom systems support. With the IT Support Team supporting the whole school, you are guaranteed to always find new and interesting problems to solve every day.

Working in partnership with TDM Wyre Academy, during the apprenticeship we will give you all the training and support you need to become an established IT Professional. You?ll be joining a school that supports not just apprentices, but all of our staff, to be the best we can be and provide excellent services for all who work and attend Holy Trinity Catholic School. As an apprentice with us you?ll get real work experience, a dedicated work place mentor, and many training opportunities in order to give you all the skills and competencies required to be an IT Professional.

Key Requirements

Some IT skills are required, but even more so you must be a customer service champion and be someone who wants to help and support others in a school environment.

Also desirable are:

  • Five GCSE's at grade A* C, or equivalent, in English and Maths
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An analytical approach to problem solving
  • A smart and professional appearance
  • Good listening and note taking skills
  • Basic IT knowledge e.g. Microsoft Office
  • Desire to learn new technologies

Job purpose:

  • To provide a maintenance, installation and support services on the school site
  • To provide technical assistance and software assistance during lessons
  • To provide training sessions for staff and students
  • To work alongside ICT Operations Manager to continually develop ICT infrastructure in the school
  • To teach the basic use of software programmes as necessary

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the provision of ICT support in all areas of the school and for partner
  • Repair and maintenance of all Desktop and Laptop PC?s
  • Assistance with network installations and configuration
  • Providing support for students and staff in the use of ICT
  • Maintenance of Health and Safety issues related to the use of ICT
  • The maintenance and improvement of the ICT equipment used in the school
  • The monitoring of legal implications relating to the use of ICT within the school
  • The provision of in class support for ICT lessons or lessons using ICT in the school
  • To ensure that at all times ICT facilities are fully functional and secure
  • To contribute to the development of ICT and its use within the school
  • To undertake the necessary training associated with the post
  • To train other staff
  • Maintenance of existing PCs and Laptops including the installation of all appropriate software
  • Assistance with the maintenance and development of a school wide network
  • Deliver and set up of portable ICT equipment as required by staff
  • Installation and maintenance of Whiteboard technology and other technological equipment associated with teaching and learning
  • To maintain and help develop the school website
  • Provide support to classroom teachers during lessons including working with students and the delivery of some technical parts of lessons
  • Provide support for students in out of hours classes/extra curricular time
  • To contribute to provide of physical security measures to protect against loss of equipment
  • To provide support for the in-service training of staff
  • To provide support for the development of the school website through liaison with all areas of the school and the Network Manager
  • To provide support for the wider community of the school including feeder primaries and adult partner groups as directed
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Headteacher or his delegate
  • To ensure that all ICT systems within the school are installed and operated safely and to remove from use any such equipment that is deemed to be unsafe to use
  • To work proactively to ensure that equipment is protected from damage or misuse and to be vigilant in spotting unsafe or dangerous equipment and to take appropriate action


Supervising Officer?s Job Title: ICT Operations Manager Level of supervision:

  • Regularly supervised with work checked by supervisor
  • Left to work within established guidelines subject to scrutiny by supervisor
  • Plan own work to ensure the meeting of defined objectives
