Infrastructure (VMware) Engineer

An opportunity exists for an Infrastructure Engineer to work in an exciting and fast moving company.

The infrastructure engineer will be a member of the infrastructure team which consists of approximately six team members, all of who have their own technical skills.

The successful applicant would be expected to work closely with the head of infrastructure, head of architecture, and service desk.

Main Function of Job

To work as part of the infrastructure team and lead both project and BAU activities within the infrastructure space.

To ensure high availability of design and maximum performance of the infrastructure in use, and to provide 2nd and 3rd line support and be a member of the infrastructure on-call rota.

Tasks:

The key tasks of the roles are:

- Establishing the Windows and Linux environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, defining, documenting and enforcing system standards

- Active Directory and Exchange Server administration

- Designing and implementing new solutions and improving resilience of the current environment

- Maximizing server performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with architects on network optimisation

- Undertaking data infrastructure fault investigations of the Windows and Linux environment, using information from multiple sources

- Securing systems by establishing and enforcing policies, and defining and monitoring access

- Reporting server operational status by gathering and prioritising information and managing projects

- Upgrading servers and software to the latest stable firmware releases

- Support of other engineers and end users/customers during installation

- Remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur upon initial installation

- Liaising with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers on a regular basis

- Speaking with customers via email and phone for initial requirement capture

Essential Attributes and experience:

- At least three years experience in an IT Systems Administration role or similar, ideally within an environment handling 200+ workstations

- Completed several IT projects, where you were responsible for designing and implementing the solution

- Proven experience with configuration and maintenance of standard IT system administration tools such as backup, anti-virus, remote access and authentication solutions

- Experience with Virtualisation solutions deployment, configuration and support

- Expert knowledge in Networking and Security infrastructure solutions (e.g. Checkpoint, Palo Alto)

- Expert level knowledge in Virtualisation and Cloud solutions (e.g. VMWare, XenServer, Amazon Web Services)

- Expertise in implementation and system administration of a diverse OS environment (Windows, Linux, Mac)

- Knowledge of core Infrastructure services and functions (DNS, DHCP, LDAP, etc.)

- Understanding of Active Directory design and Group Policy Administration

- Understanding of core messaging technologies (SMTP, Exchange, etc.)

- Strong TCP/IP and network/security component knowledge (e.g. Switches, Firewalls, VPNs)

- Create documentation on installation and configuration procedures

- Ability to participate in multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

- The ability to design, configure and monitor highly available solutions

- Self-motivated, good communication skills, with a positive attitude and team spirit

- Expertise in working and installing Red Hat / CentOS systems with common modules such as Apache web server, Tomcat/JBOSS application server is desirable

- Strong scripting and automation skills is desirable

- Storage solutions Experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting (HP 3Par) is desirable

- Expert knowledge in Networking and Security infrastructure solutions (e.g. Checkpoint, Palo Alto) is desirable

- Expert level knowledge in Virtualisation and Cloud solutions (e.g. VMWare, Amazon Web Services) is desirable

- Expert level knowledge of in load balancing solution (e.g. F5, Riverbed) is desirable
