Software Controls Development Engineer Role

A Software/Control Systems Engineer vacancy has arisen to join a team of software developers whose prime responsibility is the design and implementation of laser control, target area system control and motion control solutions for existing and exciting new projects. This practical real world post requires the jobholder to determine controls specifications then design, implement and maintain those control systems.

You will be a member of the Electrical Engineering Group reporting directly to the Software Controls Team Leader. Less experienced candidates are likely to be recruited at Band C/D level and the Band D/E level reserved for experienced software developers. Consideration will be given to candidates who are able to work part time hours.

Duties will include:

  • being sensitive to the needs and developing relationships with customers to determine and refine laser related control system requirements
  • designing and developing laser, target area and motion control systems for large scale scientific laser systems using development tools and techniques
  • developing software for laser diagnostic equipment, e.g. cameras and sensors to interpret real world data into an informative format.

About You

You will have a STEM based degree or HNC/HND, or equivalent and experience of developing software systems in a scientific, technical or knowledge based environment. In addition you?ll have some experience of programming using a modern programming language e.g. C, C#, C++, Visual Basic, Python, Java or EPICS experience.

It?s likely you?ll be enthusiastic about science and engineering matters relating to the post and be able to convey your enthusiasm clearly to a variety of audiences. As a well organised person, you will be able to balance priorities and deadlines effectively, particularly when managing many activities in parallel. Working either independently or within the team your innovative nature helps resolve problems by developing new resources and your excellent interpersonal skills allow you to communicate with people at all levels.

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.
